1. ความต่างที่ต้องจำ
ทั้งสองวลีตามด้วยคำนามนับได้พหูพจน์เหมือนกัน แต่ประธานจริงต่างกัน:
a number of + plural noun หมายถึง “หลาย...” จึงใช้กริยาพหูพจน์;
ส่วน the number of + plural noun หมายถึง “จำนวนของ...” โดยคำว่า number เป็นประธาน จึงใช้กริยาเอกพจน์

2. A number of = many

ดังนั้นประธานหลักคือ the number ซึ่งเป็นเอกพจน์ แม้คำนามหลัง of จะเป็นพหูพจน์

5. ข้อผิดพบบ่อย / Tip สอบ

ใน the number of students คำว่า students อยู่ใกล้กริยาแต่ไม่ใช่ประธานหลัก
และอย่าสับสนกับ a great/large number of ซึ่งยังคงใช้กริยาพหูพจน์

- Tip 1วง a หรือ the ก่อน แล้วเลือกกริยาตามทั้งวลี ไม่ใช่ตาม noun ที่ใกล้ที่สุด
- Tip 2a large/great number of ทำงานเหมือน a number of → กริยาพหูพจน์
- Tip 3ถ้าเป็น the numbers of จริงๆ คำว่า numbers เป็นพหูพจน์ → ใช้กริยาพหูพจน์
