A detector (or light sensor) is a device that turns light into an electrical signal, such as a current or a voltage.
What a detector measures cannot by itself tell you whether the quantity is irradiance or radiance; that depends on the measuring system built around the detector.
For example, if a photodiode is used as the detector and looks directly at a light source, what it measures is the radiant flux, or light power, in W.
Divide that by the area on which the light falls and you get the irradiance.
But if the same photodiode measures light reflected from a sheet of paper at a certain angle, with a tube that limits the light it accepts to one small angle, what it measures becomes the radiance.
Which optical detectors exist, how they work and what they are used for are summarised in Table 2.

To summarise: what a detector measures depends on the measurement method. This topic explains the measurement in two cases.
- Case 1 — a detector that receives light directly (no imaging lens). The light falls directly on the detector (a photodiode) and no image is formed. With nothing in front of the detector you read irradiance \(E\); with a tube in front of it you read radiance \(L\). The photodiode circuit and the conversion from voltage (read more)
- Case 2 — a camera with an imaging lens (image radiometry). The lens forms an image, and each pixel reads the radiance \(L\) of the surface region it looks at. (read more)
A photodiode is a small piece of silicon that turns light directly into electric current. It works like a tiny solar cell: the more light falls on it, the larger the current it gives. That current is very small (microamperes), so it is hard to read directly. The usual remedy is a circuit that converts the current into a voltage, which is easy to measure.
The circuit that converts the current into a voltage is shown in Figure 1. When light falls on the photodiode it produces a current \(I_{ph}\) (“ph” is short for photo). An op-amp (operational amplifier) amplifies the signal, and the current flowing through the resistor produces the voltage \(V_{out} = I_{ph}R_f\).
To convert the current \(I_{ph}\) into an optical quantity, you need to know how the sensor responds to light, that is, how much current 1 W of light produces. This comes from the sensor manufacturer’s documentation. For example, the BPW20RF photodiode has a graph of its responsivity \(S(\lambda)\), in amperes per watt (A/W), shown in Figure 2. The current \(I_{ph}\) is then equal to \(S(\lambda)\) times the radiant flux (W), which can be written as:
When we measure \(V_{out}\), we can calculate \(I_{ph} = V_{out}/R_f\), and then calculate the optical power from the equation:
Note: this is not the manufacturer’s raw data; it is for understanding, not for calibration. รูปที่ 2 — responsivity \(S(\lambda)\) ของ photodiode BPW20RF เลื่อนเมาส์ชี้ (หรือแตะ หรือกดปุ่มลูกศร) เพื่ออ่านค่าที่ความยาวคลื่นใดก็ได้ แกนซ้ายคือความไวสัมพัทธ์ \(S(\lambda)_{rel}\) (ค่าสูงสุด = 1) อ่านด้วยตาจาก datasheet Fig. 7 [3] แกนขวาคือ \(S(\lambda)\) หน่วย A/W โดย \(S(\lambda)\,[\mathrm{A/W}] = S(\lambda)_{rel}\times S(950\,\mathrm{nm})\) เมื่อ \(S(950\,\mathrm{nm})\) ได้จาก datasheet ซึ่งระบุว่าที่ \(E = 1\ \mathrm{mW/cm^2}\) และ 950 nm ให้ reverse light current 42 µA (วัดที่ \(V_R = 5\) V) ดังนั้น \(\Phi = E\,A = 10\ \mathrm{W/m^2}\times 7.5\times10^{-6}\ \mathrm{m^2} = 75\ \mu\mathrm{W}\) แล้ว \(S(950\,\mathrm{nm}) = I/\Phi = 42\ \mu\mathrm{A}/75\ \mu\mathrm{W} = 0.56\) A/W (อ่านกราฟได้ \(S_{rel}\approx1\) ที่ 950 nm)

Problem. Suppose \(R_f = 100\ \mathrm{k\Omega}\) and we read \(V_{out} = 4.2\) V. What is the optical power \(\Phi_{det}\) measured by the detector, and what is the irradiance \(E\), when the light comes from a laser at (1) 950 nm and (2) 550 nm? The data sheet [3] gives a sensitive area of 7.5 mm² \(=7.5\times10^{-6}\ \mathrm{m^2}\) (assume the light covers the whole sensitive area evenly).
Photocurrent. From \(V_{out} = I_{ph}R_f\):
Case 1 — laser at 950 nm (\(S(950\,\mathrm{nm}) = 0.56\) A/W)
950 nm (\(S(950\,\mathrm{nm}) = 0.56\) A/W)
Case 2 — laser at 550 nm (from Figure 2, \(S(550\,\mathrm{nm}) \approx 0.28\) A/W)
กรณีที่ 2 — แสงจาก laser ความยาวคลื่น 550 nm (จากรูปที่ 2 \(S(550\,\mathrm{nm}) \approx 0.28\) A/W)
The same voltage, 4.2 V, means 75 µW at 950 nm but 150 µW at 550 nm — twice the power — which is why you must know the wavelength (or the spectrum) before converting a voltage to watts.
When the light being measured does not consist of a single wavelength, the electric current produced (\(I_{\mathrm{ph}}\)) comes from the sum of the radiant flux at each wavelength.
The optical power and the irradiance then cannot be calculated as in Example 1.
The simplest way to measure them is to calibrate the measured signal against an optical power meter, for example a thermal detector
(Thorlabs, PM16-401),
which measures the power at the detector directly.
The calibration holds only for light with the same spectrum.
Thermal detector
(Thorlabs, PM16-401)
A camera is an imaging lens in front of many small detectors. The imaging lens gathers the light from each point of the scene and brings it together to form a small picture (an image) of the scene on the sensor. The sensor is a grid of pixels, and each pixel is a tiny photodiode like the one in card 3. The lens has an opening, the aperture, which limits how much light gets in. Its size is described by the f-number \(F\), the focal length divided by the diameter of the opening: the smaller \(F\), the wider the opening and the more light reaches each pixel.
Because of the picture, each pixel looks at only its own small region of the scene, through the aperture. A pixel therefore behaves like the tube of card 2, and what it reads is proportional to the radiance \(L\) of the region it looks at. This is why a camera reads radiance rather than irradiance.
Why the value of one pixel stays the same when the camera backs away
Take a flat wall, lit evenly, that fills the whole picture. Look at one pixel inside the picture of the wall, and move the camera from a distance \(d\) to a distance \(2d\) (here \(d\) is the distance from the wall to the camera). Two things change, in opposite directions:
- The pixel sees more wall. At twice the distance, the region of wall that one pixel looks at is twice as wide and twice as tall, so its area is 4 times larger (it grows as \(d^{2}\)).
- Each square metre of wall sends less light into the lens. The lens opening is now seen from twice as far, so each square metre of wall sends only 1/4 as much light into it (it falls as \(1/d^{2}\)).
The wall region is 4 times larger and each square metre contributes 1/4 as much, so the light reaching that pixel is unchanged. The value of one pixel inside the picture of the wall does not depend on \(d\); it stays proportional to the radiance \(L\) of the wall. This holds as long as the wall fills the pixel. Click a button to see the case in the simulation below; everything stays at its default value except the camera distance \(d\).

You can choose the surface, and adjust the angle and the distance at which the camera receives the reflected light.

Every detector responds to the optical power that falls on its sensitive area, but the quantity you can report depends on the measuring system, that is, on what limits the beam reaching the detector, and whether it changes with distance depends on whether the source is smaller or wider than the detector’s field of view. If what the detector looks at is wider than its field of view, it measures the radiance \(L\); if it is smaller than the field of view, it measures the irradiance \(E\). The results are summarised in Table 3.

Notes on the figures: Figure 1 and Figure 3 are drawn from scratch as a circuit diagram and an interactive canvas. In Figure 3, distances, angles and apparent sizes are scaled for legibility, not to scale; every number in the readouts is computed from the equations above. The specular case sends the reflected light into a very narrow lobe (0.5° wide) around the mirror direction, as in 01 Radiometry, as a stand-in for “one direction only” — a real polished surface is narrower by orders of magnitude. Figure 2 is re-plotted from values read off the data sheet curve.
