Radiometry — Measuring the Energy in Light
Six interactive cards that build up the SI radiometric quantities from scratch — adjust the sliders and watch every number and figure update.
Radiometry is the science of measuring electromagnetic radiation. It answers a very practical set of questions about light: how much energy is there, how fast is that energy flowing, how much of it lands on a surface, and how much of it travels in one particular direction. Each of those questions has its own quantity and its own unit — and mixing them up is the single most common mistake beginners make.
A useful picture is water flowing from a shower head:
- Radiant energy is the total amount of water — measured in litres (for light: joules).
- Radiant flux (power) is the flow rate — litres per second (for light: watts). This is what a sensor actually measures.
- Irradiance is how hard the water hits one patch of your skin — flow rate per unit of area.
- Radiant intensity is how much water goes into one particular direction — flow rate per unit of solid angle.
- Radiance combines the two: flow per direction and per unit of area. Your eye and a camera pixel respond in proportion to it, which we perceive as “brightness” — but the sensor itself still measures power (W).
Two conventions worth fixing right away. First, radiometric symbols carry the subscript e for electromagnetic — \(\Phi_e\), \(E_e\), \(L_e\) — which simply distinguishes them from the matching photometric symbols used for human vision. Second, radiant exitance \(M_e\) and irradiance \(E_e\) share the same unit, W/m², and the same defining equation \(d\Phi_e/dA\). The difference is direction only: exitance leaves a surface, irradiance arrives at one.

Radiant intensity is the radiant flux a point source sends into one unit of solid angle, in a given direction. It answers “how much of the source's power goes this way?”
The new idea here is the solid angle \(\omega\), measured in steradians (sr). A solid angle is the 3-D version of an ordinary angle: it measures how wide a cone is, not how long it is. Point a cone at a sphere of radius \(r\) and it cuts out a patch of area \(dA\); the solid angle of that cone is \[ d\omega = \frac{dA}{r^{2}} \qquad [\mathrm{sr}] \] Because the area is divided by \(r^2\), the answer does not depend on \(r\) at all — move the screen twice as far away and the patch is four times bigger, so the ratio is unchanged. A cone that opens up to swallow the whole sphere has \(\omega = 4\pi r^{2}/r^{2} = 4\pi\) sr, which is why a sphere radiating \(\Phi_e\) watts uniformly in every direction has an intensity of \(\Phi_e/4\pi\) W/sr.
An LED emits 2 W of optical power and (to keep the arithmetic clean) spreads it evenly in every direction. The whole surrounding solid angle is \(4\pi = 12.57\) sr, so \[ I_e = \frac{\Phi_e}{4\pi} = \frac{2\ \mathrm{W}}{12.57\ \mathrm{sr}} = 0.159\ \mathrm{W/sr} \] Now put a small square detector of area 1 cm² = \(10^{-4}\) m² at \(r = 2\) m. Its own cone is very narrow — much narrower than the one drawn in the figure: \[ d\omega = \frac{dA}{r^{2}} = \frac{10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2}}{(2\ \mathrm{m})^{2}} = 2.5\times10^{-5}\ \mathrm{sr} \] and the power it actually collects is \[ \Phi = I_e\,d\omega = 0.159 \times 2.5\times10^{-5} = 3.98\ \mu\mathrm{W} \]
Move that detector to 4 m and the intensity is still 0.159 W/sr — intensity is a property of the source, not of where you stand. But the detector's solid angle drops by a factor of four, so it now collects only 0.995 µW. That factor of four is the inverse-square law, and it is what card 3 is about.
Irradiance is the radiant flux arriving at a surface per unit of area.
Suppose a point source radiates spherically, as in the previous section. All of the source's flux \(\Phi_e\) must cross a sphere of radius \(r\), whose area is \(4\pi r^{2}\), so the irradiance everywhere on this sphere is
This is the familiar inverse-square law. Nothing is lost along the way — the same flux is simply smeared over a bigger area. Double the distance and the patch has four times the area, so each square metre of it receives only a quarter as much (4 equal cells at \(2r\)). Triple it and each square metre gets a ninth (9 cells at \(3r\)). See the figure below, where each cell carries exactly the flux that the single patch carried at \(r\).

The same LED emits 2 W evenly in every direction, so \(I_e = 0.159\ \mathrm{W/sr}\) (card 2). To see how much power a real sensor collects, use a small square sensor of \(1\ \mathrm{cm} \times 1\ \mathrm{cm}\), i.e. area \(A = 1\ \mathrm{cm^2} = 10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2}\) (the default of the “Sensor area” control above). Assume it faces the LED (its surface is perpendicular to the rays) and is much smaller than the distance, so the irradiance is practically uniform over its face and the power it collects is simply \(\Phi = E_e \cdot A\).
At \(r = 1\) m the LED's flux is spread over a sphere of area \(4\pi(1\ \mathrm{m})^2 = 12.57\ \mathrm{m^2}\): \[ E_e = \frac{2\ \mathrm{W}}{12.57\ \mathrm{m^2}} = 0.159\ \mathrm{W/m^2} \] and the power collected by the sensor is \[ \Phi = E_e \cdot A = 0.159\ \mathrm{W/m^2} \times 10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2} = 1.59\times10^{-5}\ \mathrm{W} = 15.9\ \mu\mathrm{W} \] At \(r = 2\) m the sphere has area \(4\pi(2\ \mathrm{m})^2 = 50.3\ \mathrm{m^2}\) and the irradiance is \[ E_e = \frac{2\ \mathrm{W}}{50.3\ \mathrm{m^2}} = 0.0398\ \mathrm{W/m^2} \] exactly one quarter of the value at 1 m — or, going straight through Eq. (11), \(E_e = I_e/r^2 = 0.159\ \mathrm{W/sr} \,/\, (2\ \mathrm{m})^2 = 0.0398\ \mathrm{W/m^2}\). The same sensor now collects \[ \Phi = E_e \cdot A = 0.0398\ \mathrm{W/m^2} \times 10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2} = 3.98\ \mu\mathrm{W} \] one quarter of the power at 1 m.
ที่ \(r = 1\) m ฟลักซ์ของ LED บนทรงกลมพื้นที่ \(4\pi(1\ \mathrm{m})^2 = 12.57\ \mathrm{m^2}\): \[ E_e = \frac{2\ \mathrm{W}}{12.57\ \mathrm{m^2}} = 0.159\ \mathrm{W/m^2} \] กำลังที่เซนเซอร์รับได้คือ \[ \Phi = E_e \cdot A = 0.159\ \mathrm{W/m^2} \times 10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2} = 1.59\times10^{-5}\ \mathrm{W} = 15.9\ \mu\mathrm{W} \] ที่ \(r = 2\) m ทรงกลมมีพื้นที่ \(4\pi(2\ \mathrm{m})^2 = 50.3\ \mathrm{m^2}\) ความเข้มรังสีตกกระทบจึงเป็น \[ E_e = \frac{2\ \mathrm{W}}{50.3\ \mathrm{m^2}} = 0.0398\ \mathrm{W/m^2} \] ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในสี่ของค่าที่ 1 m พอดี — หรือคิดตรง ๆ จากสมการ (11) ก็ได้ว่า \(E_e = I_e/r^2 = 0.159\ \mathrm{W/sr} \,/\, (2\ \mathrm{m})^2 = 0.0398\ \mathrm{W/m^2}\) เซนเซอร์ตัวเดิมจึงรับกำลังได้ \[ \Phi = E_e \cdot A = 0.0398\ \mathrm{W/m^2} \times 10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2} = 3.98\ \mu\mathrm{W} \] เป็นหนึ่งในสี่ของกำลังที่ 1 m
Cross-check against card 2: at \(r = 2\) m this 1 cm² sensor subtends \(d\omega = A/r^2 = 10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2} / (2\ \mathrm{m})^2 = 2.5\times10^{-5}\ \mathrm{sr}\), so it collects \(I_e\,d\omega = 0.159 \times 2.5\times10^{-5} = 3.98\ \mu\mathrm{W}\) — the identical answer. Two routes, one number: that is a good sign you have the definitions straight.
Radiant intensity describes a point source, but real sources have size: a lamp panel, a computer screen, a patch of sky. For those we need to consider direction and area. That quantity is radiance — the radiant intensity per unit of projected area, perpendicular to the direction you are looking from.
Imagine looking at a sheet of paper stuck on a wall, face-on: you see the full rectangle, with the full area \(A\). View the same sheet from any angle \(\theta\) and the rectangle you see is squashed to \(A\cos\theta\) — at \(\theta = 60^\circ\) you see only half of the area, and at \(90^\circ\) it becomes a thin line with no visible area at all. This squashed shape is called the projected area.
Radiance is the quantity that your eye and your camera respond to: it is the physical measurement of what we call brightness in everyday life.
Left: radiant flux collected along a direction making an angle \(\theta\) with the normal to the radiating surface. The surface \(A\) is drawn as a plane perpendicular to its normal. The green plane, centred on the same point where the normal meets the surface, is its projection onto a plane perpendicular to the viewing direction, \(A\cos\theta\), which shrinks as \(\theta\) grows. The aperture \(A_p\) sits on the circle of radius \(r\), turned square-on to the viewing direction, and the shaded cone is the solid angle it subtends at the surface.
Right: where \(A\cos\theta\) comes from. The surface is drawn edge-on and the whole picture is rotated so the viewing direction is horizontal. Rays parallel to that direction are traced from both ends of the surface onto a plane held perpendicular to it; the width they cut out of that plane is the projected area \(A\cos\theta\). The rod is the same length in both cases — only the width facing the detector has shrunk. Left panel redrawn as an interactive figure after Pedrotti, F. L., et al. (2019). A flat lamp panel measures 10 cm × 10 cm, so \(A = 100\ \mathrm{cm^2} = 0.01\ \mathrm{m^2}\). We place a detector looking at the panel at \(\theta = 60^\circ\) from the normal, and the instrument reports an intensity of \(I(60^\circ) = 0.25\) W/sr in that direction. The projected area is \[ A\cos 60^\circ = 0.01 \times 0.5 = 0.005\ \mathrm{m^2} \] so the radiance is \[ L_e = \frac{I(\theta)}{A\cos\theta} = \frac{0.25\ \mathrm{W/sr}}{0.005\ \mathrm{m^2}} = 50\ \mathrm{W\cdot sr^{-1}\cdot m^{-2}} \] How much power actually gets into the instrument? Its aperture has area \(A_p = 1\ \mathrm{cm^2} = 10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2}\) at a distance \(r = 0.5\) m, so \[ d\omega = \frac{A_p}{r^{2}} = \frac{10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2}}{(0.5\ \mathrm{m})^{2}} = 4\times10^{-4}\ \mathrm{sr}, \qquad \Phi = I(\theta)\,d\omega = 0.25\ \mathrm{W/sr} \times 4\times10^{-4}\ \mathrm{sr} = 100\ \mu\mathrm{W} \]
แผงไฟแบนขนาด 10 cm × 10 cm ดังนั้น \(A = 100\ \mathrm{cm^2} = 0.01\ \mathrm{m^2}\) เราวางตัวรับให้มองแผงไฟที่มุม \(\theta = 60^\circ\) จากเส้นปกติ และเครื่องรายงานความเข้ม \(I(60^\circ) = 0.25\) W/sr ในทิศนั้น พื้นที่ฉายจึงเป็น \[ A\cos 60^\circ = 0.01 \times 0.5 = 0.005\ \mathrm{m^2} \] เรเดียนซ์จึงเป็น \[ L_e = \frac{I(\theta)}{A\cos\theta} = \frac{0.25\ \mathrm{W/sr}}{0.005\ \mathrm{m^2}} = 50\ \mathrm{W\cdot sr^{-1}\cdot m^{-2}} \] แล้วกำลังที่เข้าเครื่องมือจริง ๆ เท่าไร? ช่องรับของเครื่องวัดมีพื้นที่ \(A_p = 1\ \mathrm{cm^2} = 10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2}\) ที่ระยะ \(r = 0.5\) m ดังนั้น \[ d\omega = \frac{A_p}{r^{2}} = \frac{10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2}}{(0.5\ \mathrm{m})^{2}} = 4\times10^{-4}\ \mathrm{sr}, \qquad \Phi = I(\theta)\,d\omega = 0.25\ \mathrm{W/sr} \times 4\times10^{-4}\ \mathrm{sr} = 100\ \mu\mathrm{W} \]
In this example we simply measured \(I\) at one angle and divided by the projected area at that angle to get \(L_e\). So what happens to \(L_e\) when we measure at other angles around the panel? Card 5 answers that question.
The light reflected from a surface has a different intensity in each viewing direction. Looking at a diffusing surface head-on (at \(\theta = 0^\circ\)) it is brightest, with intensity \(I(0)\); at larger viewing angles the intensity falls according to the equation below. We call a material whose surface scatters light this way a Lambertian surface, and the equation Lambert's cosine law:
(Lambert's cosine law):
Now take the radiance \(L_e\) and replace \(I(\theta)\) with Lambert's cosine law. The \(\cos\theta\) terms cancel exactly, and \(L_e\) is a constant:
A Lambertian surface is therefore also called perfectly diffuse, because its radiance (brightness) does not change with the viewing angle — matte white paper is an example. To test whether a surface is perfectly diffuse, look at it from many angles: if it always appears equally bright, it is Lambertian.
Use the toggle below to test cases that do not follow this law.
In the “uniform intensity” mode, the surface sends the same \(I\) into every direction,
so \(L_e = I(0)/(A\cos\theta)\) grows as \(1/\cos\theta\) and keeps increasing as you look almost
along the surface — the surface would appear to glare ever more fiercely the flatter you
looked at it. Real diffuse surfaces do not behave that way; that is the content of Eq. (13).
The third setting, clear glass / polished surface, does not scatter light at all:
it only gives specular reflection, where the light leaves in a single direction, with the
angle of reflection equal to the angle of incidence. A viewer therefore sees light only at that
angle, and \(L_e = 0\) at every other angle.
จึงได้ \(L_e = I(0)/(A\cos\theta)\) ซึ่งเพิ่มขึ้นตาม \(1/\cos\theta\)

For the cosine law the curve is a circle tangent to the surface. The viewing arrow ends on the curve, so its length is \(I(\theta)/I(0)\).
Right: bars comparing the three quantities at the current angle, relative to their values at \(\theta = 0^\circ\) — \(I(\theta)\) falls, \(A\cos\theta\) falls by the same factor, and their ratio \(L_e\) does not move.

Suppose a lamp panel is a perfectly diffuse surface with area \(A = 100\ \mathrm{cm^2} = 0.01\ \mathrm{m^2}\) and \(I(0) = 0.5\) W/sr. Computing \(\cos\theta\), \(I(\theta)\), \(A\cos\theta\) and \(L_e\) at each viewing angle gives the values in the table below (the table follows the surface model and the settings chosen above, and starts with the Lambertian model):
กรณีแผงไฟเป็นผิวกระจายแสงสมบูรณ์ มีพื้นที่ \(A = 100\ \mathrm{cm^2} = 0.01\ \mathrm{m^2}\) และมีค่า \(I(0) = 0.5\) W/sr เมื่อคำนวณหาค่า \(\cos\theta\), \(I(\theta)\), \(A\cos\theta\) และ \(L_e\) ที่แต่ละมุมที่มอง จะได้ค่าดังตารางด้านล่าง (ตารางเปลี่ยนตามแบบจำลองผิวและค่าที่ตั้งไว้ด้านบน โดยเริ่มต้นเป็นแบบจำลองแลมเบอร์เชียน):
| θ | cos θ | I(θ) [W/sr] | A cos θ [m²] | Le [W·sr⁻¹·m⁻²] |
|---|
We conclude that, looking around a perfectly diffuse surface, \(L_e\) is constant and does not change with the viewing angle.
A nonabsorbing medium is a medium that is transparent and uniform: it neither
absorbs nor scatters light, and its refractive index stays the same along the whole path.
Examples of nonabsorbing media: a vacuum (sunlight crossing space), clean air over a short distance,
and clear glass or clear water over a short path.
Examples that do not meet this condition: fog and smoke (they scatter and absorb light), tinted glass
or sunglasses (they absorb light), and frosted glass (it scatters light).
When light travels in a medium that neither absorbs nor scatters it, \(L\) of the beam is
the same at every point along the ray, however far the beam travels.
When light travels through a medium that absorbs or scatters it, \(L\) decreases along the way, by an
amount that depends on the medium.
The proof that \(L\) has the same value at every point along the ray in such a medium is given in Introduction to Optics (Pedrotti et al.), pp. 13–14.
