1. หลักตัดสินใจ: มีกรรมหรือไม่

lie = นอน เอน หรืออยู่ในแนวราบ เป็นกริยาไม่รับกรรม (intransitive)
lay = วางบางสิ่งลง เป็นกริยารับกรรม (transitive) จึงต้องตอบว่า “วางอะไร”

2. Lie: นอน เอน หรืออยู่

เมื่อประธานเปลี่ยนท่าหรืออยู่ในตำแหน่งนั้นเอง ใช้ lie โดยไม่ตามด้วยกรรมตรง คำบอกสถานที่ เช่น on the floor ไม่ใช่กรรม

ใช้ lay เมื่อประธานทำให้คนหรือสิ่งของอื่นอยู่ในตำแหน่งหนึ่ง ต้องมีกรรม เช่น lay the book, lay it, lay the baby
