(Strain and Stress)

Load a bar with a force and see how stress, strain, and the electrical resistance of a material respond — and how temperature disturbs the reading.

1. Concept 1.

Pull on a bar and it grows longer and its cross-section becomes smaller; push on it and the bar becomes shorter and its cross-section larger. Engineers describe this behavior with two quantities: stress and strain.

  • Stress is the internal force per unit of cross-sectional area, and strain is the fractional change in length that this stress produces [1], [2]. Stress cannot be measured directly, so strain is usually measured first and stress is calculated from it through the stiffness of the material. Strain follows from Hooke's law (valid in the elastic range only) [2].
    \[ \sigma = \frac{F}{A} \qquad \varepsilon = \frac{\sigma}{E} \qquad \Delta L = \varepsilon L \]
  • Poisson's ratio is the negative ratio of transverse to axial strain [1], [2]. This page uses it to compute the new cross-sectional area (A′) of the bar. (A′) \[ \varepsilon_{lat} = -\nu\,\varepsilon \qquad A' = A\,(1+\varepsilon_{lat})^{2} \]
  • When the size of the bar changes, its resistance changes too. The resistance of a metallic conductor depends on its length, its cross-sectional area, and its resistivity (ρ), as in the equations: เมื่อแท่งเหล็กมีขนาดเปลี่ยนไป ส่งผลให้ความต้านทานเปลี่ยนไปด้วย โดยที่ความต้านทานของตัวนำโลหะขึ้นกับความยาว พื้นที่หน้าตัด และสภาพต้านทานไฟฟ้า (resistivity, ρ) ดังสมการ \[ R_0 = \frac{\rho L}{A} \qquad R' = \frac{\rho\,(L + \Delta L)}{A'} \]
  • Temperature also changes the resistance of a material, even when no force is applied. It is described by the temperature coefficient of resistance (\(\alpha\)), which is the fractional change in resistance per 1 °C of temperature change. For most metals the linear relation below applies.

2. How to use this lab 2.

Choose a Material, set the bar Length and Area, drive the Force with the slider or number box (positive = tension, negative = compression), and set the Temperature. The dashed outline on the canvas is the unloaded bar; the filled one is the loaded bar, with the deformation exaggerated so you can see it. Suggested order:

  1. Keep the default (F = 0) and note the baseline resistance Rnominal.
Rnominal
  3. Set F = +5000 N and watch σ, ε, ΔL, and R′ move together.
  5. Set F = −5000 N: every signed quantity flips, and the resistance falls below nominal.
  7. Keep the same force and switch material: ε changes because of E, while the change in resistance also depends on ν (how much the area shrinks).
  9. Return to F = 0 and raise the temperature: the resistance drifts although nothing is being loaded.

Constantan bar with the default geometry, L = 0.1 m and A = 1×10−4 m², at 20 °C, loaded with F = 5000 N in tension. The material values are E = 162 GPa, ν = 0.33 and ρ = 4.9×10−7 Ω·m.

\(\sigma\)\(5000 / 1\times10^{-4}\)\(5.00\times10^{7}\ \mathrm{Pa}\) (50 MPa)
\(\varepsilon\)\(5.00\times10^{7} / 162\times10^{9}\)\(3.086\times10^{-4}\) (≈ 309 µε)
\(\Delta L\)\(3.086\times10^{-4}\times 0.1\)\(3.086\times10^{-5}\ \mathrm{m}\) (≈ 30.9 µm)
\(\varepsilon_{lat}\)\(-0.33\times 3.086\times10^{-4}\)\(-1.019\times10^{-4}\)
\(A'\)\(10^{-4}\,(1-1.019\times10^{-4})^{2}\)\(9.998\times10^{-5}\ \mathrm{m^{2}}\)
\(R_0\)\(4.9\times10^{-7}\times 0.1 / 10^{-4}\)\(4.900000\times10^{-4}\ \Omega\)
\(L'\)\(0.1 + 3.086\times10^{-5}\)\(0.1000309\ \mathrm{m}\)
\(R'\)\(4.9\times10^{-7}\times 0.1000309 / 9.998\times10^{-5}\)\(4.902511\times10^{-4}\ \Omega\)
\(\Delta R\)\(R' - R_0\)\(2.511\times10^{-7}\ \Omega\) (0.051 %)

Reading the result
Case F = 5000 N: a stress of 50 MPa produces a strain of only 309 µε, because the metal is very stiff.
The bar becomes only 30.9 µm longer, and its cross-sectional area decreases by about 0.02 %.
R′ = 4.902511×10−4 Ω, an increase of 0.051 %.

Case F = 0 N and T = 50 °C, with \(\alpha = 8\times10^{-6}\ ^{\circ}\mathrm{C}^{-1}\) and \(\Delta T = 30\ ^{\circ}\mathrm{C}\):
R(T) = 4.901176×10−4 Ω, an increase of 0.024 %.

Therefore a resistance reading alone cannot tell whether the change comes from force or from temperature, unless the temperature is known or compensated [1], [3].

R = 4.902511 × 10⁻⁴ Ω เพิ่มขึ้น 0.051 %

กรณี F = 0 N และ T = 50 °C เมื่อ \(\alpha = 8\times10^{-6}\ ^{\circ}\mathrm{C}^{-1}\) และ \(\Delta T = 30\ ^{\circ}\mathrm{C}\)

4. Common mistakes and limitations 4.

  • Elastic range only. Hooke's law holds below the yield stress [2]; the lab clamps the force at ±σy·A and models no plastic flow, hysteresis, or buckling.
  • One axial force only. Bending, torsion, and multiaxial stress are not modelled, and the transverse sensitivity of real gages [1] is ignored.
  • The whole bar is the gage. Here the entire bar is the resistive element, so Rnominal is only about 0.49 mΩ. A real foil gage is a thin grid bonded to a specimen and is supplied at standard values such as 120, 350, or 1000 Ω [1], [3].
  • Thermal expansion is not simulated. Only the temperature coefficient of resistance is modelled. In practice the gage and the specimen also expand by different amounts, which adds an apparent strain; manufacturers reduce it by matching the gage alloy to the expansion coefficient of the test material (self-temperature compensation) [3], and bridge arrangements can cancel part of it [1]. Drift of constantan at elevated temperature [3] is not modelled either.
  • Illustrative material values. E, ν, ρ, α, and σy in the table are teaching values, not manufacturer data. α is a constant here, and the response is treated as linear.

5. Real-world applications 5.

Strain gages are bonded to structures to measure strain directly, and they sit inside sensors that convert load, pressure, and torque into a strain signal [1]. For stress analysis the choice of gage alloy, backing, and resistance is a design decision: constantan is the most widely used alloy because its resistance changes very little with temperature, and a 350 Ω gage generates less heat than a 120 Ω one at the same voltage and is less affected by lead-wire resistance [3]. The relations on this page are the first step toward the bridge circuits and load cells covered in the following lessons.
