Strain Gauge Strain Gauge

A simulation of adjusting the grid shape of a strain gauge, the force on a steel specimen, and the temperature, to observe how the strain of the specimen and the resistance of the gauge respond.

A strain gauge is a thin metal foil, etched into a grid pattern and mounted on a plastic backing [1]. The grid is one long conductor folded back and forth (a serpentine) so that it fits into a small area. The backing is glued to the specimen, so when the specimen stretches or shortens, the grid stretches or shortens with it and its electrical resistance changes. What we measure from a strain gauge is therefore its resistance, which is then used to calculate the strain of the material that the strain gauge is attached to.

In practice we do not measure the change in length or area to find the strain of the material. Instead we measure the change in resistance of the strain gauge and calculate the strain with the equation below.

\[ R_{s} = R_0\,(1 + GF\,\varepsilon) \qquad \frac{\Delta R}{R_0} = GF\,\varepsilon \]

Here GF is the gauge factor, a property of the strain gauge that is given by the manufacturer [3]. \(R_0\) is the resistance before loading and \(R_s\) is the resistance after loading. \(\varepsilon\) is the strain of the specimen. \(\Delta R = R_s - R_0\) is the change in resistance of the strain gauge caused by the strain, so \(\Delta R/R_0\) is the fractional change in resistance.

The resistance of a strain gauge does not change only with the strain it receives; it also changes with temperature. It is described by the temperature coefficient of resistance (\(\alpha\)), which is the fractional change in resistance per 1 °C of temperature change. For most metals the linear relation below applies.

\[ R(T) = R_{s}\,\bigl(1 + \alpha\,\Delta T\bigr), \qquad \Delta T = T - 20\ ^{\circ}\mathrm{C} \]

The Semiconductor material uses

\[ R(T) = R_{s}\,e^{\alpha\,\Delta T} \]

A short metal strip has a low resistance, which is hard to measure. A strain gauge is therefore designed with the metal folded back and forth many times, so that the conductor is long and its resistance is higher.

How to use this lab

Drive the Force on the steel specimen (positive = tension, negative = compression) and set the Temperature. Choose the Gauge material, then shape the grid with Grid length, Grid width, Spacing, Number of grids and Foil thickness. The Specimen length and area set the strain that a given force produces.
The upper canvas shows the specimen before loading (dashed) and after loading, with the deformation exaggerated. The lower canvas is a fixed reference drawing that names l, w and s. Suggested order:

  1. Keep the defaults (F = 0) and note Ltotal, Agauge and the baseline Rnominal.
Rnominal
  3. Set F = +5000 N, then −5000 N: ε, ΔL and ΔR/R change sign together.
  5. Change n or w: Rnominal changes (a longer path or a smaller cross-section gives a higher resistance) but ΔR/R does not, because it equals GF·ε.
  7. Return to F = 0 and raise the temperature: R(T) drifts although nothing is loaded.

Reading the result (R0 = 239.61 Ω is the reference; the change is ΔR = R − R0 and the percentage is ΔR / R0)

Case 1: F = 5000 N, T = 20 °C
A stress of 50 MPa produces a strain of 250 µε
Rs = 239.729805 Ω
ΔR = +0.119805 Ω (+0.0500 %)

Case 2: F = 0 N, T = 50 °C, with \(\alpha = 8\times10^{-6}\ ^{\circ}\mathrm{C}^{-1}\) and \(\Delta T = 30\ ^{\circ}\mathrm{C}\)
R(T) = 239.6675 Ω
ΔR = +0.0575 Ω (+0.0240 %), with no load at all

Case 3: F = 5000 N, T = 50 °C
R(T) = 239.7873 Ω
ΔR = +0.1773 Ω (+0.0740 %)

The change of 0.05 % in Case 1 is small, because the gauge factor multiplies a very small strain, so the signal has to be amplified. The temperature alone in Case 2 gives 0.024 %, which is 48 % of the signal from the load, and it is equivalent to an apparent strain of \(\alpha\,\Delta T / GF = 120\ \mu\varepsilon\). A resistance reading alone cannot tell force from temperature, so temperature has to be compensated in real measurements [1].

Rs = 239.729805 Ω
ΔR = +0.119805 Ω (+0.0500 %)

กรณีที่ 2: F = 0 N, T = 50 °C เมื่อ \(\alpha = 8\times10^{-6}\ ^{\circ}\mathrm{C}^{-1}\) และ \(\Delta T = 30\ ^{\circ}\mathrm{C}\)
R(T) = 239.6675 Ω

R(T) = 239.7873 Ω
ΔR = +0.1773 Ω (+0.0740 %)

Example 2: compare with standard gauges

Condition: F = 5000 N, T = 20 °C, so ε = 250 µε and GF = 2. Because \(\Delta R/R = GF\,\varepsilon = 2\times 2.5\times10^{-4}\) does not depend on the gauge, both gauges change by 0.0500 %.

Gauge 120 Ω
R0 = 120 Ω
ΔR = 120 × 2 × 2.5×10−4 = +0.06 Ω (+0.0500 %)
Rs = 120.06 Ω

Gauge 350 Ω
R0 = 350 Ω
ΔR = 350 × 2 × 2.5×10−4 = +0.175 Ω (+0.0500 %)
Rs = 350.175 Ω

The percentage is the same for both, but ΔR in ohms is larger for a larger R0. Standard gauges are supplied at 120 Ω or 350 Ω [1], for example 120 Ω ± 0.3 % and 350 Ω ± 0.2 % for a general-purpose gauge with a 3.18 mm gauge length [2]. The default gauge in the lab is not one of them: 239.61 Ω is not a standard value, and its 100 mm grid is far longer than the usual 3–6 mm [1]. At the same voltage a 350 Ω gauge produces one third of the heat of a 120 Ω gauge [1].

R0 = 120 Ω
ΔR = 120 × 2 × 2.5×10−4 = +0.06 Ω (+0.0500 %)
Rs = 120.06 Ω

R0 = 350 Ω
ΔR = 350 × 2 × 2.5×10−4 = +0.175 Ω (+0.0500 %)
Rs = 350.175 Ω
