(Superposition)
How waves of the same frequency combine at a point.
In practice, several waves often arrive at the same point at the same time, for example light from two sources falling on the same screen.
The superposition principle for electromagnetic waves says that the electric field E and the magnetic field B of the individual waves simply add. As vector equations [1]:
On this page, E is treated as a scalar, which is valid when the electric fields of the two waves are parallel. For the waves in Figure 1, this can be seen from the ⊙ symbols on the wavefronts of both beams: they mean that the electric field points out of the page, perpendicular to the plane of the drawing. The electric fields of the two beams therefore point in the same direction, even though the beams travel at an angle to each other.
Combining two waves of the same frequency
Consider two plane waves that travel at the same speed and have the same wavelength. Each beam starts from its own reference plane, a position where the phase of the wave at t = 0 is known: \(\varphi_1\) for beam 1 and \(\varphi_2\) for beam 2. From there, each wave travels a distance \(s_1\) (beam 1) or \(s_2\) (beam 2) to reach point P. At P the two waves can therefore be written as

| \(k\) | Wave number, \(k = 2\pi/\lambda\)เลขคลื่น (wave number) \(k = 2\pi/\lambda\) | rad/m |
| \(\omega\) | Angular frequency, \(\omega = 2\pi f\)ความถี่เชิงมุม \(\omega = 2\pi f\) | rad/s |

| \(E_R\) | Resultant field at Pสนามลัพธ์ที่ P | V/m |
At P the two waves oscillate at the same frequency, so they rise and fall with the same rhythm. The only difference is how far one wave “lags behind” the other. The value that measures this lag is \(\Delta\) in Eq. (7), and \(\Delta\) alone decides whether the resultant wave oscillates strongly or weakly.
Imagine that wave 2 is identical to wave 1 except that it is shifted along the direction of travel by a distance d. When \(\varphi_1 = \varphi_2\), \(d = s_2 - s_1\), and since \(k = 2\pi/\lambda\) we get
Constructive interference
If the distance \(d = 0, \lambda, 2\lambda, \dots\) (that is, \(d = m\lambda\)), the crests of one wave coincide with the crests of the other, and the troughs with the troughs. Both waves push the field in the same direction at every moment, so the amplitudes simply add: \((E_{01} + E_{02})\). In this case \(\Delta\) is
Destructive interference
If the distance \(d = \lambda/2,\ 3\lambda/2, \dots\) (that is, \(d = (m + \tfrac{1}{2})\lambda\)), a crest of one wave meets a trough of the other, and the resulting amplitude is the difference \(|E_{01} - E_{02}|\). In this case \(\Delta\) is
If \(E_{01} = E_{02}\), the amplitude is zero, so no electric field is left at P.
Other cases
For any other distance, the resultant wave still oscillates at the original frequency, but its amplitude lies between the destructive and the constructive value. Drag \(\varphi_2\) in the visualization below and watch the amplitude of \(E_R\) change gradually from one case to the other.

How to use
- Press Constructive and check that the crests of E1 and E2 line up and that E0R = E01 + E02.
- Press Destructive and compare the positions of the crests and troughs of the two waves. If you then press “Set E02 = E01”, ER is zero at all times.
- Change s2 a little at a time and see how the calculated Δ changes.
- With s1 = s2, change φ1 and φ2 to see the effect of different initial phases.
- Press Play to sweep φ2 from 0° to 360° and watch the amplitude of ER. When the constructive or destructive case occurs, the animation pauses for 2 seconds.

Let \(\varphi_1 = \varphi_2 = 0\), \(E_{01} = 1\) and \(E_{02} = 0.6\).
- If \(s_2 - s_1 = 1200\) nm \(= 2\lambda\), then \(\Delta = 4\pi\) (m = 2): constructive, and the total amplitude is \(1 + 0.6 = 1.6\).
- If \(s_2 - s_1 = 900\) nm \(= 1.5\lambda\), then \(\Delta = 3\pi\): destructive, and the total amplitude is \(|1 - 0.6| = 0.4\). It is not zero because the two amplitudes are not equal.
Cautions and limits of the model
- The model uses E as a scalar. That is valid when the fields of the two waves are parallel; if they are perpendicular, the result differs from the parallel case [1].
- The model describes continuous waves of a single frequency (monochromatic). If the two frequencies differ, the result changes with time (beats).
- The graphs show the field E at P, not the irradiance. A sensor responds far too slowly to follow the oscillation of light, so what it measures is the time average of E², not E(t).
