Standing Waves คลื่นนิ่ง (Standing Waves)
How a wave and its own reflection combine into a pattern that stays in place, and how two mirrors select the frequencies of a laser.
Consider light that travels to a mirror and is reflected back. In the same medium, two waves now travel in opposite directions. At every position the electric field is the sum of the two, by the superposition principle (see the 01 Principle page of this category).
The sum does not travel. If you look at the graph (Figure 1) of the field against position x at any time, you will see that the wave has the same shape at every moment, and only the height changes, rising and falling together along the whole curve. Positions where the field is zero at all times are called nodes. Positions where the field oscillates most strongly are called antinodes. A wave like this is called a standing wave.
These standing-wave ideas also explain the waves inside a laser cavity. Most people, including the author, used to think that a laser gives light of a single wavelength, for example that a red laser has a wavelength of exactly 632.8 nm. In reality the cavity of a laser supports standing waves at several wavelengths that differ only slightly. Each one is called a mode of the cavity, and a laser emits several modes at once. This page builds an interactive visualization to help you understand how standing waves form and how the waves in a laser cavity behave.

Let the mirror sit at \(x = 0\). A wave travels in the \(-x\) direction and hits the mirror, and the reflected wave travels back in the \(+x\) direction.Assume no energy is lost at the mirror (it neither absorbs nor transmits), so the incident and reflected waves have the same amplitude \(E_0\). The electric fields of the incident (\(E_{\text{in}}\)) and reflected (\(E_{\text{ref}}\)) waves can then be written as
Here \(\varphi_R\) is the phase shift on reflection. The sum \(E_R = E_{\text{in}} + E_{\text{ref}}\) can be simplified with the identity \(\sin A + \sin B = 2\sin\frac{A+B}{2}\cos\frac{A-B}{2}\):
ใช้เอกลักษณ์ \(\sin A + \sin B = 2\sin\frac{A+B}{2}\cos\frac{A-B}{2}\) ได้
Looking at Eq. (3), it separates into two independent parts. The first part depends on \(x\) only and is called the position-dependent amplitude, written
The second part depends on \(t\) only and is the factor that makes the whole curve rise and fall together, written
So Eq. (3) can be written as
At a given position x, \(A(x)\) is constant, while \(C(t)\) changes with time. Try it yourself in Card A of the visualization: set λ = 600 nm, press φR = π, and then look at the positions along the x axis one at a time, for example an antinode and a node.
- antinode at x = 150 nm
- node at x = 300 nm
You can see that \(E_R\) keeps the same nodes and antinodes, but its size changes with time: the antinode swings through its full \(\pm 2E_0\) while the node is always 0.
- antinode ที่ x = 150 nm
- node ที่ x = 300 nm
To see clearly why this sum is called a standing wave, compare it with a wave that really travels.

Positions of nodes and antinodesตำแหน่ง node และ antinode
The key positions in a standing wave are the nodes and the antinodes (\(m = 0, \pm 1, \pm 2, \dots\)).
A node is a position where \(A(x) = 0\), so the electric field is zero at all times, whatever the value of \(C(t)\). Setting \(\cos(kx + \varphi_R/2) = 0\) gives its position:
An antinode is a position where \(|A(x)|\) is largest, equal to \(2E_0\), and the field oscillates most strongly. Setting \(\cos(kx + \varphi_R/2) = \pm 1\) gives its position:
The distance between neighbouring nodes is always \(\lambda/2\), whatever the value of \(\varphi_R\). Light reflected at the mirror has its phase shifted by \(\pi\) because \(E = 0\) at the mirror surface, so the phase difference is \(\pi\).
Nodes and antinodes lead directly to the laser, because inside a laser two mirrors face each other. Light is reflected back and forth and a standing wave forms between the two mirrors. The next question is which standing waves fit in the space between the mirrors. This page focuses on the wavelengths that fit in that space; how laser light is produced and amplified until it leaves as a beam is a separate topic and is not covered here.
LASER cavity — it consists of two mirrors placed a distance \(d\) apart, and the field is required to be zero at both ends (a node at each mirror) [1]. Assume the medium between the mirrors can amplify light from \(\lambda_1\) to \(\lambda_2\) and has refractive index \(n\), and that a point source emitting every wavelength sits at mirror 2 on the right. Light travels from the right mirror to the left one and is reflected back toward mirror 2, and a standing wave forms inside the laser cavity.
The emitted light contains many wavelengths, but a standing wave can exist only if it has a node at the position of both mirrors, so only some wavelengths fit the distance \(d\) exactly. Other wavelengths are reflected back and forth and end up out of phase, so no standing wave forms. Each wavelength that fits exactly is called one mode of the cavity.
To find these wavelengths, consider the node positions from Eq. (4), in which neighbouring nodes are \(\lambda'/2\) apart, where \(\lambda'\) is the wavelength in the medium between the mirrors. The second mirror can therefore sit at a node when \(d\) is a whole number of \(\lambda'/2\) (\(d = m\lambda'_m/2\)), where \(\lambda'_m\) is the wavelength in the medium of mode \(m\). When a wave travels in a medium with a larger \(n\), its wavelength becomes \(n\) times shorter (\(\lambda'_m = \lambda_m/n\)), where \(\lambda_m\) is the vacuum wavelength of mode \(m\). The equation for finding \(\lambda_m\) can therefore be written as
In Eq. (6), \(m\) is the number of half-wavelengths \(\lambda_m/(2n)\) that fit end to end between the two mirrors, which is the number of loops of the standing wave in the cavity (Card C counts these loops). The number of full wavelengths in the cavity is therefore \(m/2\), not \(m\): for example \(m = 3\) means 3 loops, or 1.5 wavelengths.
One loop runs from one node to the next, with one antinode in the middle, so its length equals the node spacing \(\lambda_m/(2n)\); the two mirrors are nodes as well. There are two equivalent ways to count \(m\): count the antinodes (one per loop), or count all the nodes including both mirrors and subtract 1. For \(m = 3\) there are 4 nodes (2 mirrors and 2 inside) and 3 antinodes, so 3 loops. In Card C the red dots are the nodes, so you can try counting them.
\(m\) must be an integer because the second mirror has to sit exactly at a node. If \(m = 3.5\), the mirror would sit at an antinode, where the field is not zero. A wavelength for which \(2nd/\lambda\) is not an integer is therefore not a mode of this cavity.
Worked example: a cavity with three modes. Take \(n = 1\), \(d = 0.15\) m, and a gain medium that amplifies from \(\lambda_1 = 632.800\) nm to \(\lambda_2 = 632.804\) nm. Rearranging Eq. (6) gives
\[ \lambda_m = \frac{2nd}{m} \]A mode is an integer \(m\) that puts \(\lambda_m\) between \(\lambda_1\) and \(\lambda_2\). First convert the wavelengths to metres: \(\lambda_1 = 6.328\times10^{-7}\) m and \(\lambda_2 = 6.32804\times10^{-7}\) m. A longer wavelength gives a smaller \(m\), so \(\lambda_2\) sets the smallest \(m\) and \(\lambda_1\) the largest.
\[ m_{\min} = \frac{2nd}{\lambda_2} = \frac{2\times1\times0.15\ \text{m}}{6.32804\times10^{-7}\ \text{m}} \approx 474{,}080.4 \] \[ m_{\max} = \frac{2nd}{\lambda_1} = \frac{2\times1\times0.15\ \text{m}}{6.328\times10^{-7}\ \text{m}} \approx 474{,}083.4 \]Exactly three integers lie between 474,080.4 and 474,083.4: \(m = 474{,}081,\ 474{,}082,\ 474{,}083\). Substitute each into \(\lambda_m = 2nd/m\); for \(m = 474{,}083\),
\[ \lambda_m = \frac{2\times1\times0.15\ \text{m}}{474{,}083} \approx 6.328006\times10^{-7}\ \text{m} \]The other two modes give the values in the table.
| \(m\) | \(\lambda_m\) (m) | in nm |
|---|---|---|
| 474,081 | \(6.328033\times10^{-7}\) | 632.8033 |
| 474,082 | \(6.328019\times10^{-7}\) | 632.8019 |
| 474,083 | \(6.328006\times10^{-7}\) | 632.8006 |
The three modes differ in wavelength by only \(2.67\times10^{-12}\) m, which the eye cannot resolve, so we see the light from a LASER as a single colour.
The frequencies the cavity supports are therefore evenly spaced, by
If the gain medium amplifies light only for wavelengths from \(\lambda_1\) to \(\lambda_2\), this corresponds to a range of frequencies of width
The number of modes expected inside the gain bandwidth, and the loop number \(m\) of the mode at \(\lambda \approx \lambda_1\), are
Eq. (11) is only approximate, and its result is usually not an integer. Take a cavity with \(d = 0.50\) m, \(n = 1\) and \(\lambda_1 = 632.800\) nm \(= 6.328\times10^{-7}\) m:
\[ m \approx \frac{2nd}{\lambda_1} = \frac{2 \times 1 \times 0.50\ \text{m}}{6.328\times10^{-7}\ \text{m}} \approx 1.580278\times10^{6} \]This is not an integer, which means \(\lambda_1\) is not exactly a mode of the cavity. The real mode is a nearby integer \(m\) that still lies inside the gain bandwidth. Here, rounding down gives \(m = 1{,}580{,}278\) and \(\lambda_m = 2nd/m \approx 6.3280005\times10^{-7}\) m, which does lie between \(\lambda_1\) and \(\lambda_2\). Rounding down works only when the rounded value is still inside the gain bandwidth, so Card B counts the modes that really fall inside it separately from \(N\).

Note: the electric field \(E\) really has the unit V/m. The a.u. on the graph axes of this page stands for arbitrary units (relative units): \(E_0\) is set to 1 so that you can see the shape of the wave, and the numbers on the axis are relative to \(E_0\), so 2 means \(2E_0\), not 2 V/m.
Scope: the mirror reflects everything and the amplitudes are equal · the gain bandwidth is flat (equal gain at every frequency) · strictly valid for plane mirrors.
3How to use this visualization
Card A — Standing wave
A — Standing wave
- Start at \(\lambda\) = 600 nm. Press Play and watch the curve \(E_R\) rise and fall along its whole length at once.
- Set \(\varphi_R = \pi\).
Case study 1: where are the nodes? Try looking at x = 0, 300, 600 nm. - Change to \(\varphi_R = \pi/2\). Case study 2: where do the nodes move to? Is the spacing still the same?
- Change to \(\varphi_R = 0\). Case study 3: the mirror surface becomes an antinode (the field oscillates most strongly, \(2E_0\)). Where do the nodes move to?
- Change \(\lambda\) and see whether the node-to-node distance (\(\lambda/2\)) changes, and what happens to the node positions.
Card B — Standing waves between two mirrors (initial values \(\lambda_1\) = 600 nm, \(\lambda_2\) = 1200 nm, n = 1). This range is an assumed value and is far wider than a real laser's, so that you can see that the loops of different modes have different sizes.
- Set d = 3 µm: the modes are \(m = 5\) to \(10\), six in all, and the middle mode is \(m = 7\), shown by the dashed line. Press ◀ ▶ or choose from the list to change the selected mode, shown by the orange line.
- Reduce d to 2 µm: only m = 4, 5, 6 remain (three modes, N ≈ 3.33).
- Reduce d to 1 µm: only m = 2 and 3 remain (two modes, N ≈ 1.67).
As d gets shorter, neighbouring modes are further apart, and fewer modes lie within the range. - Reduce d to 0.5 µm: N ≈ 0.83, which is less than 1, but there is still one mode, \(m = 1\) (one full loop between the mirrors). Try reducing it further to 0.1 µm and no mode is left in the range. So N < 1 does not mean there is no mode; it depends on where the nodes are.
- Try typing a value of d above the maximum, for example 5 µm. The page sets it back to the largest value allowed, because one mode can be drawn with at most 10 loops and there must be fewer than 10 modes in the range. This maximum changes with \(\lambda_1\), \(\lambda_2\) and n.
Card C — Example: standing waves in a laser cavity (cavity length 0.50 m, n = 1, \(\lambda_1\) = 632.800 nm, \(\lambda_2\) = 632.804 nm, as listed under "Given"). The picture is not to scale.
- Press m = 3 and set "Number of m to show" to 1. Count the red dots (nodes): there are 4 including both mirrors, plus 3 antinodes, so 3 loops. The readout gives one loop as \(3.164\times10^{-7}\) m.
- Press m = 12 and set "Number of m to show" to 3. You will see modes \(m = 12, 13, 14\) together, drawn as slightly different shades of red. Every mode has a node exactly at both mirrors. Try increasing it to 10 modes, and then 11: at 11 the picture tells you there are too many modes.
- Press "actual m", which is \(m = 1{,}580{,}278\). The loops are too dense to draw one by one. Compare with the \(m\) listed under "Given" and see why neighbouring modes differ in frequency by only about 1 part in \(10^{6}\).
Common mistakes & limitations
- The incident and reflected waves have the same amplitude only (the mirror reflects everything). If the reflection is not complete, the result is a standing wave superposed on a travelling wave that carries energy away [1], which this page does not model.
- Real laser mirrors are often curved. The equations on this page are exact only for plane mirrors, but they can be used qualitatively for curved mirrors [1].
- The gain bandwidth on this page is flat (equal gain at every frequency). A real one is bell-shaped, so modes near its edges are weaker, and a real laser also has competition between modes.
- N is an average and not always a whole number. How many modes actually fall inside the gain bandwidth depends on where the modes sit (Card B shows both values).
- The gain bandwidths used on this page are assumed teaching values, not the specification of any real laser.
- Card C is not to scale (it draws only part of the cavity); use it only to see the node condition at both mirrors. Card B uses a micrometre-sized cavity and a 600–1200 nm gain bandwidth so that the loops of different modes visibly differ; it is not a real laser.
