(Superposition)

This section is about what happens when two or more waves arrive at the same point. The superposition principle says that the fields of the individual waves simply add. For waves of the same frequency the result depends on one number, the phase difference between them; for waves whose frequencies differ slightly, the result is a wave whose strength rises and falls at the difference of the two frequencies.

The first page, Principle, sets up two plane waves meeting at a point, defines the phase difference, and lets you change the wavelength, amplitudes, phases and path lengths to see constructive and destructive interference.

The second page, Standing Waves, looks at a wave that meets its own reflection. It shows why nodes and antinodes stay in place, and how two mirrors facing each other allow only certain wavelengths, which is how the frequencies of a laser cavity are chosen.

The third page, Beat Phenomenon, adds two waves whose frequencies differ slightly. It shows how the sum splits into a fast carrier and a slowly changing envelope, why the loudness rises and falls at the difference of the two frequencies, and lets you hear it and tune a string by listening until the beat disappears.

The fourth page, Phase and Group Velocities, puts the waves in a medium whose refractive index depends on the wavelength. It shows the carrier crests sliding through the envelope because the phase velocity and the group velocity differ, and lets you send light pulses (on, off, on, off) into fused silica and place a detector to see how far they can travel before their edges spread and the detector reads the bits wrongly.
