Interference of Light Interference
This section explains what happens when two beams of light fall on the same point. The result is not simply the sum of the two irradiances: an interference term makes some points brighter and others darker, so bright and dark fringes appear. The content starts by explaining the conditions for seeing fringes and goes on to using fringes to measure wavelength, the radius of curvature of a lens, and the thickness of a thin film.
The first two topics lay the groundwork for two-beam interference: when the interference term is present or vanishes, how coherent and incoherent light differ, whether a detector sees fringes, and how the clarity of the fringes is calculated.
The next four topics show ways to turn light from one source into two beams that meet on a screen, such as Young's double slit, Lloyd's mirror, Fresnel's mirrors and Fresnel's biprism. Each page shows how to find the positions of the bright fringes and the fringe spacing from the distance between the two sources, and lets you adjust the values in an interactive visualization.
The last four topics apply the basics from the first six: measuring the thickness of a thin film by analysing its spectrum, reading how the thickness of an air wedge or an oil slick changes from the fringes and colours you see, measuring the curvature of a lens from Newton's rings, and measuring film thicknesses on the nanometer scale.
