Fresnel’s Mirrors Fresnel’s mirrors
How do two mirrors set at a small angle turn one point source into two virtual sources, and why is the central fringe bright?
If light from a single point source falls on two plane mirrors placed edge to edge at a small angle, do fringes form on a screen, and are they the same as the fringes of Lloyd’s mirror?
Fresnel’s mirrors is an experiment in which light from a point source (S) reflects from two plane mirrors, M1 and M2, which meet at point O and are tilted at a small angle \(\theta\) to each other. The images of S in the two mirrors act as two virtual sources, S1 and S2. Because both parts of the light come from the same source, they combine coherently (the meaning of coherent is explained on the page Two-Beam Interference) and form fringes on the screen in the region of wave superposition. This is the same idea as in Young’s Double-Slit Experiment and Lloyd’s Mirror [1].
Lloyd’s Mirror [1]
Fresnel’s mirrors differs from Lloyd’s mirror in two ways. First, both parts of the light are reflected light; the direct light from S is blocked so that it cannot reach the screen [1]. Second, the distance between the two virtual sources (\(a\)) is not set directly but depends on the angle \(\theta\) between the mirrors and on the distance \(d\) from S to O.
This page has an interactive visualization that shows, in 2-D, the paths of the light from S that reflects from the two mirrors to the screen. You can see how the fringes and the irradiance change when you change the angle between the mirrors, the distance of S and the position of the screen.

Two paths to point Pแสงสองทางที่ไปถึงจุด P
Let \(s_1\) be the distance travelled by the light that reflects at point R1 on mirror M1 and then reaches point P on the screen (path (1) in Figure 1), and \(s_2\) the distance travelled by the light that reflects at point R2 on mirror M2 and then reaches P (path (2)). The path difference between the two paths is [1]
S1 is the image of S in mirror M1: it lies on the line drawn from S perpendicular to the line of M1, on the other side of the mirror line and as far from it as S. Every point on the line of M1, including R1, is therefore the same distance from S and from S1 (SR1 = S1R1), and the light reflected from R1 to P lies on the straight line drawn from S1 through R1, just like the virtual source on the Lloyd’s mirror page. For the same reason, S2 is the image of S in mirror M2. This gives
\(s_1\) and \(s_2\) are therefore the straight-line distances from the virtual sources S1 and S2 to P. Finding the path difference is then the same as for the double slit: two points, S1 and S2, a distance \(a\) apart, send light to point P.
Distance a between S1 and S2ระยะ \(a\) ระหว่าง S1 กับ S2
O lies on the lines of both mirrors. For the same reason that SR1 = S1R1, point O is the same distance from S, S1 and S2: OS = OS1 = OS2 = \(d\). The three points therefore lie on a circle of radius \(d\) centred at O (the dashed arc in Figure 1). Let \(\alpha\) be the angle between OS and the line of M1. The image S1 lies on the other side of the mirror line at the same angle \(\alpha\), so the angle SOS1 is \(2\alpha\). The line of M2, extended beyond O, makes an angle \(\theta\) with the line of M1, so the angle between OS and this line is \(\alpha + \theta\), and the angle SOS2 is \(2(\alpha + \theta)\). The angle between OS1 and OS2 is therefore
The angle \(2\theta\) does not depend on \(\alpha\), that is, it does not depend on where S is. Triangle S1OS2 has sides OS1 = OS2 = \(d\), so the line that bisects the angle \(2\theta\) is perpendicular to S1S2 at its midpoint and splits the triangle into two right triangles, each with an angle \(\theta\) at O. Half of \(a\) is therefore \(d\sin\theta\), and when \(\theta\) is small (in rad), the small-angle approximation \(\sin\theta \cong \theta\) gives [1]
The line drawn from the midpoint of S1S2 through O to the screen is the optical axis of this experiment. The screen is perpendicular to this line, at a distance \(D\) from O. The midpoint of S1S2 is a distance \(d\cos\theta\) from O, so the distance \(s\) from the virtual sources to the screen, measured along the optical axis, is given by Eq. (4), and when \(\theta\) is small (\(\cos\theta \cong 1\)) it is approximately \(d + D\) [1]
Path difference
Let \(y\) be the height of P on the screen, measured from the optical axis. Along the optical axis, S1 and S2 are a distance \(s\) from the screen, and they lie a distance \(a/2\) above and below the optical axis. Using the Pythagorean theorem as on the page Lloyd’s Mirror, with \(L\) replaced by \(s\), gives
Substituting \(s_1\) and \(s_2\) into Eq. (1) gives
When \(s\) is much larger than \(a\), the lines S1P and S2P are almost parallel. When P is also close to the optical axis (\(y \ll s\)), the same small-angle approximation as on the page Young’s Double-Slit Experiment can be used, with \(L\) replaced by \(s\). Substituting \(a\) and \(s\) from Eqs. (3) and (4) then gives
Irradiance at P when S1 and S2 both have an extra phase of πIrradiance
Light travelling in air that reflects from the glass surface of a mirror gains an extra phase of \(\pi\) [1], which has the same effect as making the light travel an extra half wavelength (\(\lambda/2\)). In Lloyd’s mirror only one path is reflected, so this extra phase shifts the fringes by half a fringe spacing. In Fresnel’s mirrors, however, the light on each path reflects once, so S1 and S2 both gain the same extra phase \(\pi\). Replacing \(s_1\) by \(s_1 + \lambda/2\) and \(s_2\) by \(s_2 + \lambda/2\) in Eq. (1), the added parts cancel completely, and the irradiance at P is given by the same equation as for Young’s experiment [1]
Here \(I_0\) is the irradiance at P when light arrives along only one path.
Positions of the bright and dark fringesตำแหน่งของ fringe สว่างและ fringe มืด
A bright fringe occurs where \(\cos^2\) equals 1, that is, where the angle in the brackets of Eq. (7) is a whole-number multiple of \(\pi\). Substituting \(\Delta\) from Eq. (6) and solving for \(y\) step by step gives
The positions of the bright fringes are therefore [1]
\(y_m\) is the position of the bright fringe of order m, measured from the optical axis. Fringes form both above and below the optical axis, so \(m\) can be positive or negative. On the optical axis (\(y_0 = 0\)) the two paths have the same length (\(\Delta = 0\)) and the fringe is bright, unlike Lloyd’s mirror, where the fringe at \(\Delta = 0\) is dark. A dark fringe occurs where the angle in the brackets is a whole number plus one half times \(\pi\); rearranging in the same way gives
The spacing between neighbouring fringes is \(\lambda s/(2d\theta)\). When the angle \(\theta\) between the mirrors becomes smaller, S1 and S2 move closer together and the fringes spread farther apart. Equations (6), (8) and (9) hold only when \(\theta\) is small and \(y \ll s\).
Region of wave superposition
Fringes form only where the light from M1 and the light from M2 arrive together [1]. The light from M1 appears to come from S1 through mirror M1, and one edge of this beam is the line drawn from S1 through O. In the same way, one edge of the beam from M2 is the line drawn from S2 through O. These two lines make an angle \(\theta\) with the optical axis on opposite sides (half of the angle \(2\theta\)). If the mirrors are long enough, the region of wave superposition on the screen is therefore
Outside this region the screen receives light from only one mirror (\(I = I_0\)) or no light at all, because the direct light from S is blocked.

Two mirrors are set at an angle \(\theta = 0.0020\) rad (about 0.11°) to each other. A point source a distance \(d = 0.200\) m from O emits light of wavelength \(\lambda = 600\) nm, and the screen is a distance \(D = 1.00\) m from O. Find the distance \(a\) between S1 and S2, the position \(y_1\) of the bright fringe, and the width of the region where fringes form.
S1 and S2 are only 0.800 mm apart, even though S is 0.200 m from O. The bright fringe \(y_1\) is 0.900 mm from the optical axis, which is also the spacing between fringes. The region where fringes form is about 4.00 mm wide (\(y\) from −2.00 mm to 2.00 mm, from Eq. (10)), so it holds 5 bright fringes, \(y_{-2}\) to \(y_2\). These positions are very small compared with \(s\) (1.20 m), so the condition \(y \ll s\) holds and Eq. (8) can be used.
3How to use the Fresnel’s mirrors visualizationวิธีใช้ visualization Fresnel’s mirrors
- Adjustable values: \(\lambda\) = 380 to 700 nm, \(d\) = 5 to 30 µm, \(\theta\) = 2 to 15°, \(D\) = 10 to 60 µm, \(y\) = −20 to 20 µm. If you type a value outside the range, the page uses the nearest value in the range and shows a note under the box.
- The page sets the lengths of both mirrors so that the beam from each mirror reaches a little beyond the region of wave superposition. A lightly shaded area is the beam from one mirror only; a more darkly shaded area is the region of wave superposition. The direct light from S is blocked, so it is not drawn.
- Graph to the right of the screen: \(I\) against the height \(y\) on the screen. The left dashed line is \(I = 0\) and the right dashed line is \(I = 4I_0\). Where light arrives from only one mirror, \(I = I_0\) (0.25 of \(4I_0\)). The dot on the graph is the value at P, and the dotted lines are the positions \(y_m\) from Eq. (8) inside the region of wave superposition.
- Moving point P: click point P or the screen and drag along the screen.
- Results: \(a\) = S1S2 (from \(2d\sin\theta\)), \(s_1\), \(s_2\), \(\Delta\) (from Eq. (5) or (6), as selected), \(I/(4I_0)\) from Eq. (7), the light reaching P and a status label: constructive interference when within \(0.05\lambda\) of the brightest condition, destructive interference when within \(0.05\lambda\) of the darkest condition, between bright and dark otherwise, and no interference when light arrives from only one mirror.

Try the visualization in the following order.
- At the start, P is at \(y\) = −6.39 µm, near the line \(y_{-3}\). What does the status label say? Then drag P to the optical axis (\(y\) = 0). What is \(\Delta\)? Is P bright or dark, and how does this differ from M′ in Lloyd’s mirror?
- Drag P up until it leaves the darkly shaded area. Which mirror does the light reaching P come from, and what is \(I/(4I_0)\)? Does the edge of the region with fringes match \(D\tan\theta\) from Eq. (10)?
- Press Reset, then reduce \(\theta\) from 15° to 6°. How do S1 and S2 move? How do the fringe spacing and the number of bright fringes on the screen change?
- Press Reset. At the start, “\(\Delta\) used in the calculation” is Eq. (6). Do the bright fringes on the graph match every \(y_m\) line? Then switch to Eq. (5). How do the bright fringes far from the optical axis change?
Common mistakes & limitations
- Scope: the light from the two mirrors has the same irradiance at P (\(I_0\)), the mirrors reflect all the light, the size of S is not taken into account, the brightness on the screen does not fall off with distance, diffraction of light is not included, and the direct light from S does not reach the screen.
- In the visualization, \(\theta\) is several degrees and \(s\) is only a few tens of µm so that several fringes fit in one figure, so the conditions \(\theta\) small and \(y \ll s\) do not hold. With Eq. (5), the brightness on the screen is calculated with the exact \(\Delta\) from \(a = 2d\sin\theta\) and \(s = d\cos\theta + D\), so the \(y_m\) lines from Eq. (8), which use \(2d\theta\) and \(d + D\), match the bright fringes only near the optical axis. With Eq. (6), the bright fringes match every \(y_m\) line, but the \(\Delta\) used is an approximation.
