How can one point source and one mirror produce fringes, and why is the fringe at the edge of the mirror dark?

Can a single point source and its own reflection combine to produce fringes, and is this the same as Young’s double-slit experiment?
Lloyd’s mirror is an experiment that takes the light from a point source (S) and uses reflection from a plane mirror MM′ to create a new point source, called the virtual source (S′). Light from both sources travels to the screen, and interference occurs on the screen. Because both parts of the light come from the same source, they combine coherently (the meaning of coherent is explained on the page Two-Beam Interference) and form fringes on the screen, the same idea as in Young’s Double-Slit Experiment. Lloyd’s mirror differs from the double slit in two ways: first, the two sources start with different phases; second, fringes can form only where the reflected light can reach.

This page has an interactive visualization that shows, in 2-D, the paths of light from the point source and the virtual source to the screen. You can see how the fringes and the irradiance change when you move the screen, the source and the mirror.

Two paths to point Pแสงสองทางที่ไปถึงจุด P

Let \(s_1\) be the distance the light travels from S straight to point P on the screen, and \(s_2\) the distance travelled by the light that reflects at point R on the mirror before reaching P. The path difference between the two paths is [1]

\[ \Delta = s_2 - s_1 \tag{1} \]
\[ \Delta = s_2 - s_1 \tag{1} \]

S′ lies directly below S on the line perpendicular to the mirror, and is as far below the mirror surface as S is above it. Every point on the mirror surface, including R, is therefore the same distance from S and from S′ (SR = S′R), and the light reflected from R to P lies on the straight line drawn from S′ through R. This gives

\[ \begin{aligned} s_2 &= \text{SR} + \text{RP} \\ &= \text{S}'\text{R} + \text{RP} \\ &= \text{S}'\text{P} \end{aligned} \tag{2} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} s_2 &= \text{SR} + \text{RP} \\ &= \text{S}'\text{R} + \text{RP} \\ &= \text{S}'\text{P} \end{aligned} \tag{2} \]

\(s_2\) is therefore the straight-line distance from the virtual source S′ to P. Finding the path difference is then the same as for S1 and S2 in the double slit: two points, S and S′, a distance \(a\) apart, send light to point P.

Path difference

The distances \(s_1\) and \(s_2\) to point P are found with the Pythagorean theorem in the coordinate system of Figure 1. Let O be the point on the mirror plane halfway between S and S′, and take it as the origin (0, 0). The \(x\) axis runs along the mirror plane towards the screen, and the \(y\) axis is perpendicular to the mirror plane. \(L\) is the distance from O to the screen, and \(y\) is the height of P above the mirror plane. This gives
S at \((0,\ a/2)\)
S′ at \((0,\ -a/2)\) and
P at \((L,\ y)\), so the equations for \(s_1\) and \(s_2\) are

S อยู่ที่ \((0,\ a/2)\)
S′ อยู่ที่ \((0,\ -a/2)\) และ

\[ \begin{aligned} s_1 &= \sqrt{(L - 0)^2 + \left(y - \tfrac{a}{2}\right)^2} \\ &= \sqrt{L^2 + \left(y - \tfrac{a}{2}\right)^2} \end{aligned} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} s_1 &= \sqrt{(L - 0)^2 + \left(y - \tfrac{a}{2}\right)^2} \\ &= \sqrt{L^2 + \left(y - \tfrac{a}{2}\right)^2} \end{aligned} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} s_2 &= \sqrt{(L - 0)^2 + \left(y - \left(-\tfrac{a}{2}\right)\right)^2} \\ &= \sqrt{L^2 + \left(y + \tfrac{a}{2}\right)^2} \end{aligned} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} s_2 &= \sqrt{(L - 0)^2 + \left(y - \left(-\tfrac{a}{2}\right)\right)^2} \\ &= \sqrt{L^2 + \left(y + \tfrac{a}{2}\right)^2} \end{aligned} \]

Substituting \(s_1\) and \(s_2\) into Eq. (1) gives

\[ \begin{aligned} \Delta &= s_2 - s_1 \\ &= \sqrt{L^2 + \left(y + \tfrac{a}{2}\right)^2} - \sqrt{L^2 + \left(y - \tfrac{a}{2}\right)^2} \end{aligned} \tag{3} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} \Delta &= s_2 - s_1 \\ &= \sqrt{L^2 + \left(y + \tfrac{a}{2}\right)^2} - \sqrt{L^2 + \left(y - \tfrac{a}{2}\right)^2} \end{aligned} \tag{3} \]

Path difference when the screen is far away (\(y \ll L\))ผลต่างระยะทางเมื่อฉากอยู่ไกล (\(y \ll L\))

The mirror plane extended through O to the screen is the optical axis (OX), and \(\theta\) is the angle between OX and the line OP. When \(L\) is much larger than \(a\), the lines SP and S′P are almost parallel, so the extra length of S′P compared with SP can be approximated as \(a\sin\theta\), as on the page Young’s Double-Slit Experiment [1]. When P is close to the mirror plane (\(y \ll L\)), the small-angle approximation \(\sin\theta \cong \tan\theta = y/L\) gives

\[ \begin{aligned} \Delta &= s_2 - s_1 \\ &\cong a\sin\theta \\ &\cong a\tan\theta \\ &= \frac{ay}{L} \end{aligned} \tag{4} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} \Delta &= s_2 - s_1 \\ &\cong a\sin\theta \\ &\cong a\tan\theta \\ &= \frac{ay}{L} \end{aligned} \tag{4} \]

Irradiance at P when S′ has an extra phase of πIrradiance

If S and S′ sent out light in phase, the light from the two would combine like the light from Young’s two holes, giving the irradiance at P [1]

\[ I = 4I_0\cos^2\!\left(\frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda}\right) \tag{5} \]
\[ I = 4I_0\cos^2\!\left(\frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda}\right) \tag{5} \]

Here \(I_0\) is the irradiance at P when light arrives along only one path. However, light travelling in air that reflects from the glass surface of the mirror gains an extra phase of \(\pi\) [1]. The reflected light therefore appears to come from a virtual source S′ whose phase differs from that of S by \(\pi\). This difference shifts the wave by half a cycle, which has the same effect as making the light from S′ travel an extra half wavelength. So \(\Delta\) in Eq. (5) is replaced by \(\Delta + \lambda/2\):

\[ \begin{aligned} I &= 4I_0\cos^2\!\left(\frac{\pi(\Delta + \lambda/2)}{\lambda}\right) \\ &= 4I_0\cos^2\!\left(\frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} + \frac{\pi}{2}\right) \end{aligned} \tag{6} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} I &= 4I_0\cos^2\!\left(\frac{\pi(\Delta + \lambda/2)}{\lambda}\right) \\ &= 4I_0\cos^2\!\left(\frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} + \frac{\pi}{2}\right) \end{aligned} \tag{6} \]

Positions of the dark and bright fringesตำแหน่งของ fringe มืดและ fringe สว่าง

A dark fringe occurs where \(\cos^2\) equals 0, that is, where the angle in the brackets of Eq. (6) is a whole number plus one half times \(\pi\). Substituting \(\Delta\) from Eq. (4) and solving for \(y\) step by step gives

\[ \begin{aligned} \frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} + \frac{\pi}{2} &= \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\pi \\ \frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} &= m\pi \\ \Delta &= m\lambda \\ \frac{ay}{L} &= m\lambda \\ y &= \frac{m\lambda L}{a} \end{aligned} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} \frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} + \frac{\pi}{2} &= \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\pi \\ \frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} &= m\pi \\ \Delta &= m\lambda \\ \frac{ay}{L} &= m\lambda \\ y &= \frac{m\lambda L}{a} \end{aligned} \]

The positions of the dark fringes are therefore

\[ y_m = \frac{m\lambda L}{a}, \qquad m = 0, 1, 2, \ldots \tag{7} \]
\[ y_m = \frac{m\lambda L}{a}, \qquad m = 0, 1, 2, \ldots \tag{7} \]

\(y_m\) is the position of the dark fringe of order m, measured from the mirror plane. In Lloyd’s mirror there is light only above the mirror, so \(m\) takes only the values 0, 1, 2, …. At M′ (\(y_0 = 0\)) the two paths have the same length (\(\Delta = 0\)), yet the fringe is dark, because the phase of S′ differs from that of S by \(\pi\) [1]. A bright fringe occurs where \(\cos^2\) equals 1, that is, where the angle in the brackets is a whole-number multiple of \(\pi\). Writing this multiple as \((m+1)\pi\), so that \(m = 0\) is the first bright fringe, and solving step by step:

\[ \begin{aligned} \frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} + \frac{\pi}{2} &= (m+1)\pi \\ \frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} &= \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\pi \\ \Delta &= \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\lambda \\ \frac{ay}{L} &= \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\lambda \end{aligned} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} \frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} + \frac{\pi}{2} &= (m+1)\pi \\ \frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} &= \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\pi \\ \Delta &= \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\lambda \\ \frac{ay}{L} &= \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\lambda \end{aligned} \]

The positions of the bright fringes are therefore

\[ y = \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\frac{\lambda L}{a}, \qquad m = 0, 1, 2, \ldots \tag{8} \]
\[ y = \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\frac{\lambda L}{a}, \qquad m = 0, 1, 2, \ldots \tag{8} \]

The bright fringes therefore lie halfway between \(y_m\) and \(y_{m+1}\), and the spacing between neighbouring fringes is \(\lambda L/a\), as on the page Young’s Double-Slit Experiment. Equations (4), (7) and (8) hold only when \(y \ll L\), and fringes form only where both the direct and the reflected light reach the screen.

Comparison with the equation in the reference

The book [1] gives the positions of the bright fringes with the same equation as Young’s double slit, \(y_m = m\lambda L/a\) (Eq. (22) in [1]). This equation follows from Eq. (5), which does not include the phase of S′, by setting \(\cos^2\) equal to 1 (bright fringe) and rearranging:

\[ \begin{aligned} \frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} &= m\pi \\ \Delta &= m\lambda \\ \frac{ay}{L} &= m\lambda \\ y_m &= \frac{m\lambda L}{a} \end{aligned} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} \frac{\pi\Delta}{\lambda} &= m\pi \\ \Delta &= m\lambda \\ \frac{ay}{L} &= m\lambda \\ y_m &= \frac{m\lambda L}{a} \end{aligned} \]

When the light from S′ travels an extra \(\lambda/2\) (Eq. (6)), a point is bright only if its \(\Delta\) is larger by another \(\lambda/2\). From \(\Delta = ay/L\) in Eq. (4), \(y\) must increase by \(\tfrac{\lambda}{2}\cdot\tfrac{L}{a} = \tfrac{\lambda L}{2a}\). Rearranging from Eq. (22) gives

\[ \begin{aligned} y &= y_m + \frac{\lambda L}{2a} \\ &= \frac{m\lambda L}{a} + \frac{\lambda L}{2a} \\ &= \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\frac{\lambda L}{a} \end{aligned} \]
\[ \begin{aligned} y &= y_m + \frac{\lambda L}{2a} \\ &= \frac{m\lambda L}{a} + \frac{\lambda L}{2a} \\ &= \left(m + \tfrac{1}{2}\right)\frac{\lambda L}{a} \end{aligned} \]

This matches Eq. (8). The positions \(y_m\) of Eq. (22) become the positions of the dark fringes in Eq. (7), and the fringe spacing is still \(\lambda L/a\).

The first bright fringe is 0.600 mm above the mirror plane, and the dark fringe \(y_1\) is 1.20 mm above it, exactly one fringe spacing (\(\lambda L/a\) = 1.20 mm) away from M′ (the dark fringe \(y_0\)). Both positions, the first bright fringe and \(y_1\) (0.600 mm and 1.20 mm), are very small compared with \(L\) (2.00 m), so the condition \(y \ll L\) holds and Eqs. (7) and (8) can be used.

  3. Set M = 5 µm. How does the part of the screen with fringes change? Why are there no fringes at the top of the screen? Then change M′ back to 6.2 µm. What happens near the mirror plane and below it?
  4. Reset, then reduce \(a\) from 4 to 2 µm. How does the spacing between the \(y_m\) lines change? Do the dark fringes on the graph match every \(y_m\) line? Why do the higher lines not match? Then switch “\(\Delta\) used in the calculation” to Eq. (4). How do the dark fringes change?

Common mistakes & limitations

  • Scope: the direct and reflected light have the same irradiance at P (\(I_0\)), the mirror reflects all the light, the size of S is not taken into account, the brightness on the screen does not fall off with distance, and diffraction of light is not included.
  • In the visualization \(L\) is only a few µm, so \(y \ll L\) does not hold. With Eq. (3) the brightness on the screen is calculated with the exact \(\Delta\), so the \(y_m\) lines from Eq. (7) match the dark fringes only near the mirror plane. With Eq. (4) the dark fringes match every \(y_m\) line, but the \(\Delta\) used is an approximation whose error becomes large when \(y\) is not much smaller than \(L\).
  • When the mirror does not touch the screen (M′ is short of the screen, as with the starting values \(a\) = 4 µm, \(L\) = 10 µm, M′ = 6.2 µm), the screen around the mirror plane has three regions; M′ in the formulas is the distance from O to the mirror end M′.
    1. Above the mirror plane, from \(y\) = 0 to \(y = \tfrac{a}{2}\left(\tfrac{L}{\text{M}'} - 1\right)\) (1.23 µm with the starting values): \(I = I_0\) (0.25 of \(4I_0\)), because the light reflected from the end M′ does not reach this region; only direct light from S arrives, so no fringes form.
    2. Below the mirror plane, down to \(y = -\tfrac{a}{2}\left(\tfrac{L}{\text{M}'} - 1\right)\) (−1.23 µm with the starting values): \(I = I_0\), because direct light from S that passes beyond the end M′ still reaches this region, but reflected light does not reach below the mirror plane.
    3. Below \(y = -\tfrac{a}{2}\left(\tfrac{L}{\text{M}'} - 1\right)\): \(I = 0\)
    1. เหนือระนาบกระจก ตั้งแต่ \(y\) = 0 ถึง \(y = \tfrac{a}{2}\left(\tfrac{L}{\text{M}'} - 1\right)\) (ค่าเริ่มต้น 1.23 µm): \(I = I_0\) (0.25 ของ \(4I_0\)) เพราะแสงสะท้อนจากปลาย M′ ขึ้นไปไม่ถึงช่วงนี้ มีแต่แสงตรงจาก S จึงไม่เกิด fringe
    2. ใต้ระนาบกระจก ลงไปถึง \(y = -\tfrac{a}{2}\left(\tfrac{L}{\text{M}'} - 1\right)\) (ค่าเริ่มต้น −1.23 µm): \(I = I_0\) เพราะแสงตรงจาก S ที่ผ่านเลยปลาย M′ ยังลงมาถึงช่วงนี้ได้ แต่แสงสะท้อนไม่มาถึงด้านใต้ระนาบกระจก
    3. ต่ำกว่า \(y = -\tfrac{a}{2}\left(\tfrac{L}{\text{M}'} - 1\right)\): \(I = 0\)
