Two-Beam Interference Interference ของแสงสองลำ (Two-Beam Interference)
Two beams of light meet at one point: what is the total irradiance, and when does a detector measure only the sum of the two beams?
Suppose two beams of light, each with an irradiance of 1 unit, fall on the same spot. The first answer that comes to mind is that together they give 2 units. But light is a wave, so the result at that spot can be as high as 4 units or drop all the way to 0. When, then, do we get just the 2 units we first expected?
The answer depends on two things. The first is the phase of the two waves when they arrive. If a crest of one wave meets a crest of the other, the electric fields add up; if a crest meets a trough, they cancel. This adding or cancelling is called interference. The second is the detector used for the measurement. A detector does not measure the electric field at each instant; it measures an average over a period of time. If the phases of the two beams change randomly faster than that period, the adding and cancelling are averaged out, and only 2 units are left.
This topic shows which parts make up the irradiance at point P. Card A shows the waves of the two beams and their sum at P, both when the phase difference of the beams is constant and when it is random. Card B shows what a detector records as you change the detector averaging time, which here means averaging the data over time.

Consider two plane waves of the same frequency. A wavefront is a surface on which every point has the same phase (the solid lines in Figure 1). Each beam starts from its own reference plane. Assume that at time \(t = 0\) the initial phase of beam 1 is \(\phi_1\) and that of beam 2 is \(\phi_2\), and that the beams travel distances \(s_1\) and \(s_2\) to reach point P. The electric fields of the two beams at P can be written as [1]

Every detector needs some time to take one reading: the human eye takes about 1/30 s, and some very fast detectors take 1 ns (\(10^{-9}\) s). During one reading, the fields \(\vec{E}_1\) and \(\vec{E}_2\) at a wavelength of 600 nm (frequency 500 THz, period 2 fs) go up and down at least several hundred thousand times (500,000 times), so the average of the field itself is zero. What a detector responds to is the energy carried by the light, called the irradiance (\(I\)), which is the time average of the square of the field. It can be written as [1]
where \(\varepsilon_0\) is the permittivity of vacuum, \(c\) is the speed of light, \(\langle\ \rangle\) denotes a time average, and \(\vec{E}\cdot\vec{E}\) is a dot product of vectors. For two vectors, \(\vec{A}\cdot\vec{B} = AB\cos\theta\), where \(\theta\) is the angle between them: if the vectors are parallel (\(\theta = 0\)), the dot product equals the product of their magnitudes, and if they are perpendicular (\(\theta = 90^\circ\)), it is zero. Replacing \(\vec{E}\) with \(\vec{E}_p = \vec{E}_1 + \vec{E}_2\) gives the irradiance at P:

The first and second terms are the irradiances of each beam on its own, called \(I_1\) and \(I_2\). The last term appears only when the two beams meet, so it is called the interference term (\(I_{12}\)).
Taking the time average of each term (the average of \(\cos^2\) is 1/2) gives

The substitution and the trigonometric identity used are given in [1], Eqs. (6)–(12). In Eq. (9), \(\theta\) is the angle between \(\vec{E}_{01}\) and \(\vec{E}_{02}\), which comes from the dot product, and \(\delta\) is the phase difference of the two beams at P:

\(\Delta\) is the path difference, the difference between the distances the two beams travel to reach P.
Why this page uses \(\theta = 0\)ทำไมหน้านี้ใช้ \(\theta = 0\)
If \(\vec{E}_1\) is perpendicular to \(\vec{E}_2\) (\(\theta = 90^\circ\)), then \(\cos\theta = 0\): the term \(I_{12}\) vanishes and there is no interference. If they are parallel (\(\theta = 0\)), then \(\cos\theta = 1\) and \(I_{12}\) is at its largest. For unpolarized light, the electric field of each beam can be split into perpendicular components, and the parallel components of the two beams can be paired off, so each pair interferes as in the parallel case.
This page therefore considers only the case \(\vec{E}_1 \parallel \vec{E}_2\), that is \(\theta = 0\), as shown by the ⊙ symbols in Figure 1. Since the two fields point in the same direction, \(E_{01}\) and \(E_{02}\) can be treated as scalars (magnitudes only), and Eq. (6) becomes
The term \(I_{12}\) depends on the average \(\langle\cos\delta\rangle\). If \(\delta\) stays constant while the detector averages, the average equals \(\cos\delta\) and \(I_{12}\) remains: this is the case in which the waves combine coherently. If \(\delta\) changes randomly many times while the detector averages, \(\cos\delta\) is sometimes positive and sometimes negative, so its average is zero; \(I_{12}\) then drops out, leaving only \(I = I_1 + I_2\): this is the case in which the waves combine incoherently. Section 3 explains when each case occurs.

3Incoherent and coherent beamsการรวมกันของแสงแบบ incoherent และ coherent
Equations (1) and (2) describe waves with a single, perfectly defined frequency (monochromatic), with \(\phi_1\) and \(\phi_2\) constant at all times. Real light sources, however, never have a perfectly single frequency. One way to model a real source is to let the phase change randomly with time, written \(\phi_1(t)\) and \(\phi_2(t)\). In a laser, the phase changes much more slowly than one optical period, but still faster than the averaging time of a typical detector.

When a detector measures I at point P, the term \(\langle\cos\big(k(s_2 - s_1) + \phi_2(t) - \phi_1(t)\big)\rangle\) is zero. The two beams are then called mutually incoherent, and the measured irradiance is
This answers the question in the introduction. Light from two lasers, even of the same model, gives only \(I_1 + I_2\) on a detector. The reason is not that there is no interference, but that the fringes (the dark and bright bands produced by the interference of light) at each instant move faster than the time the detector needs to take a reading, so they are averaged out (see Card B, cases 2 and 3).
Coherent combination of lightการรวมกันของแสงแบบ coherent
If light from one source is split into two beams and the beams are brought back together at a detector, the phase changes in the two beams come from the same origin and are therefore correlated. If the two beams take the same time to travel, \(\phi_2(t) - \phi_1(t) = 0\) at all times, so \(\delta = k\Delta\) is constant as well, and \(\langle\cos\delta\rangle\) equals \(\cos\delta\). The two beams are then called mutually coherent, and
Coherence time and coherence lengthcoherence time และ coherence length
Light can still combine coherently when the travel times of the two beams differ (by \(\delta t\)), as long as this difference does not exceed the coherence time (\(\tau_0\)) of the source, or the path difference does not exceed the coherence length (\(l_t\)). The coherence time is [1]
The distance light travels in the time \(\tau_0\) is called the coherence length (\(l_t\)):

Source A has \(l_t \approx 20\) cm, longer than \(\Delta = 5\) cm, so the two beams are still coherent and fringes are seen. Source B has \(l_t \approx 30\) µm, much shorter than \(\Delta\), so the beams are not coherent and the detector measures only \(I = I_1 + I_2\).

Card A — The waves of the two beams and their sum at P Both beams have fixed values \(\lambda\) = 600 nm, \(E_{01} = E_{02} = \sqrt{2}\) (so \(I_1 = I_2 = 1\)) and \(s_1 = s_2\) (\(\Delta = 0\)). Only \(\phi_1\) and \(\phi_2\) can be set, so \(\delta = \phi_2 - \phi_1\). The three stacked graphs show \(E_1\), \(E_2\) and \(E_p\) against time, and Results shows \(\delta\), \(I_1\), \(I_2\), \(I_{12}\) and \(I\) in a.u.
การ์ด A — คลื่นของลำแสงสองลำและผลรวมที่จุด P ลำแสงทั้งสองมีค่าคงที่ \(\lambda\) = 600 nm, \(E_{01} = E_{02} = \sqrt{2}\) (จึงได้ \(I_1 = I_2 = 1\)) และ \(s_1 = s_2\) (\(\Delta = 0\)) ค่าที่ปรับได้มีเฉพาะ \(\phi_1\) และ \(\phi_2\) ดังนั้น \(\delta = \phi_2 - \phi_1\) กราฟสามชั้นแสดง \(E_1\), \(E_2\) และ \(E_p\) เทียบกับเวลา ส่วน Results แสดง \(\delta\), \(I_1\), \(I_2\), \(I_{12}\) และ \(I\) ในหน่วย a.u.
- At the initial setting (Constructive, \(\phi_1 = \phi_2 = 0\)), what is \(I\) in Results, and how many times \(I_1\) is it?
- Press Destructive. What does \(\phi_2\) change to, and what is \(I\)? Compare this with the question in the introduction.
- Increase \(\phi_2\) a little at a time from 0° to 360°. Over which range is \(I_{12}\) negative, and within which range does \(I\) stay?
- Press Play in Coherent mode. Time \(t\) keeps running. Do the shape of \(E_p\) and the value of \(I\) change?
- Choose Incoherent and press “Draw new phases” several times (or press Play). Is \(I_{12}\) positive or negative each time? If you averaged \(I\) over many draws, what value would you expect? Compare with Eq. (13).
tr and td used in Card Btr
Card B uses two times: \(t_r\) (phase fluctuation time), the time for which the phase of the source stays constant before it changes to a new random value, and \(t_d\) (detector averaging time), the time over which the detector averages. The detector reading at time \(t\) is the average of \(I\) over the last \(t_d\) (a moving average).
This page takes \(t_r\) to be equal to the coherence time of the source and sets \(t_r = 10\) ns, which is \(\tau_0\) for a laser with \(\Delta\nu = 100\) MHz.
การ์ด B ใช้เวลาสองค่า \(t_r\) (phase fluctuation time) คือช่วงเวลาที่ phase ของแหล่งแสงคงที่ก่อนเปลี่ยนเป็นค่าสุ่มค่าใหม่ และ \(t_d\) (detector averaging time) คือช่วงเวลาที่ detector ใช้เฉลี่ยค่า ค่าที่ detector อ่านได้ ณ เวลา \(t\) คือค่าเฉลี่ยของ \(I\) ในช่วง \(t_d\) ที่ผ่านมา (moving average)
\(\tau_0 = \dfrac{1}{1\times10^{8}\ \text{Hz}} = 1\times10^{-8}\ \text{s} = 10\ \text{ns}, \qquad l_t = (2.9979\times10^{8}\ \text{m/s})(1\times10^{-8}\ \text{s}) = 2.9979\ \text{m}\)
\(\tau_0 = \dfrac{1}{1\times10^{8}\ \text{Hz}} = 1\times10^{-8}\ \text{s} = 10\ \text{ns}, \qquad l_t = (2.9979\times10^{8}\ \text{m/s})(1\times10^{-8}\ \text{s}) = 2.9979\ \text{m}\)
An \(l_t\) of about 3 m lies within the range for lasers given above. You set \(t_d\) yourself in Card B, and comparing it with \(t_r\) gives three cases:
(1) The light combines coherently: \(\delta\) is constant and the fringes stay still.
(2) The light combines incoherently and \(t_d > t_r\): the phase changes many times within the averaging time \(t_d\), so \(I_{12}\) is averaged out and no fringes are seen.
(3) The light combines incoherently and \(t_d < t_r\): the phase hardly changes within \(t_d\), so fringes are seen, but they jump to a new position every time the phase changes.
Card B — What the detector records
- The strip at the top of Figure 3 is the image from a detector with one row of pixels. Each pixel has a different \(\Delta\); one bright band or one dark band is 1 pixel wide, and P is the pixel at position 2.
- The graph below the image shows the I read by each pixel, and Figure 4 shows I at P against time.
- The detector reading is the average of \(I\) over the last \(t_d\) (a moving average).
- For coherent light the reading appears at once; for incoherent light you have to wait until a full \(t_d\) has passed before the first reading appears.
- Initial values: \(I_1 = I_2 = 1\); \(t_r\) is fixed at 10 ns, and \(t_d\) can be set from 0.1 ns to 10000 ns. These times are far too short to see, so the card slows the display down by the time scale (initially 1/109, so 1 ns takes 1 second on screen).
Try the visualization in the following order.
- Press case 1 and then Play. Do the fringes in the image move? Does the detector reading at P change with time?
- Press case 3 (\(t_d\) = 1 ns) and then Play. The phase changes every 10 seconds on screen. What happens to the fringes each time the phase changes, and does the red line keep up with the grey line?
- Press case 2 (\(t_d\) = 1000 ns, time scale 1/107) and then Play. About how many times does the phase change within \(t_d\)? Why is there no image during the first 10 seconds? Once the image appears, is the red line close to the \(I_1 + I_2\) line, and are fringes still visible?
- In Incoherent mode, set \(t_d\) to 5, 20, 50 and 200 ns and watch how the fringes change as \(t_d\) gets longer.
Common mistakes & limitations
- Scope: two plane waves of the same frequency, with \(\vec{E}_1 \parallel \vec{E}_2\) (\(\theta = 0\)).
- Card A draws new random phases every 0.5 s on screen so that you can follow them. This is not the real timing of a light source; the real timing is shown in Card B.
- In Card B the phase jumps to a new random value exactly every \(t_r\), and \(\Delta\) changes evenly from pixel to pixel (one bright or dark band = 1 pixel). Why \(\Delta\) depends on position is explained on page 03, Young’s double-slit.
- If \(t_d\) is only a few times longer than \(t_r\), some fringes are still left in the image; the longer \(t_d\) is compared with \(t_r\), the closer the image comes to a flat \(I_1 + I_2\).
03 Young’s double-slit
