How does a single wedge of glass turn one point source into two virtual sources without any mirrors, and how does the fringe spacing depend on the prism angle and the refractive index?
In Lloyd’s Mirror and Fresnel’s Mirrors, mirrors reflect light from a single point source so that it seems to come from two virtual sources. Without any mirrors, using only a single wedge of glass, can we still get two virtual sources and fringes on a screen?
Fresnel’s biprism is a piece of glass shaped like two thin prisms joined together. One side is a flat face that faces the point source (S); the other side has two slanted faces that meet in an edge on the optical axis. Light from S that passes through the upper half of the biprism is refracted downward, toward the optical axis, and light that passes through the lower half is refracted upward. After leaving the biprism, the light therefore seems to come from two virtual sources, S1 and S2 [1]. Both parts of the light come from the same source, so they combine coherently (the meaning of coherent is explained on the page Two-Beam Interference) and form fringes on the screen in the region of wave superposition [1]. This is the same idea as in Young’s Double-Slit Experiment.
Young’s Double-Slit Experiment
Fresnel’s biprism differs from Fresnel’s mirrors in two ways. First, the biprism changes the direction of the light by refraction, not by reflection, so there is no extra phase of \(\pi\) to take into account. Second, the distance between the two virtual sources (\(a\)) depends on the distance \(d\) from S to the biprism, on the prism angle \(\alpha\) and on the refractive index \(n\) of the glass.
This page has an interactive visualization that shows, in 2-D, the paths of the light from S through the biprism to the screen. You can see how the fringes and the irradiance change when you change the prism angle, the refractive index, the distance of S and the position of the screen.

Refractive index and deviation angleRefractive index และ deviation angle
The refractive index (\(n\)) of glass tells how many times more slowly light travels in the glass than in a vacuum; for example, in glass with \(n = 1.5\), light travels 1.5 times more slowly than in a vacuum. When light passes through a glass surface that is tilted to its direction of travel, the light changes direction; this is called refraction. Light passing through a prism is refracted twice, at the surface where it enters and at the surface where it leaves, and it bends toward the thicker side of the glass. The angle between the direction of the light before it enters the prism and its direction after it leaves the prism is called the deviation angle.
The smallest deviation angle occurs when the light passes through the prism symmetrically (the angle at which the light enters equals the angle at which it leaves); this angle is called the minimum deviation. In a real biprism, the prism angle (\(\alpha\)) (Figure 1) is very small, about 1°, and the deviation angle at minimum deviation is [1]
Here \(\alpha\) is in rad. When \(\alpha\) is small (about 1°) [1], each ray from S that passes through the biprism is bent by an angle that differs only slightly from \(\delta_m\). This page therefore assumes that every ray is bent by the same angle \(\delta_m\), whatever the angle at which the light from S strikes the biprism.
Distance a between S1 and S2ระยะ \(a\) ระหว่าง S1 กับ S2
Label the points as in Figure 1 (press the button below to see Figure 1 with the values for finding \(a\)): A is the point where the light from S reaches the flat face of the upper half of the prism, B is the point where the optical axis crosses the flat face, and C is the point on the vertical line through S at the same height as A. The ray SA makes an angle \(\theta\) with the optical axis, and A is a height \(h\) above the optical axis. The right triangle ASB, with SB = \(d\) and AB = \(h\), gives
กำหนดตำแหน่งดังรูปที่ 1 (กดปุ่มด้านล่างเพื่อดูรูปที่ 1 พร้อมค่าสำหรับหาระยะ \(a\)) เมื่อ A คือจุดที่แสงจาก S ไปถึงผิวเรียบครึ่งบนของ prism ส่วน B คือจุดที่ optical axis ตัดผิวเรียบ และ C คือจุดบนแนวตั้งที่ผ่าน S ที่สูงเท่ากับ A แสง SA ทำมุม \(\theta\) กับ optical axis และ A อยู่สูงจาก optical axis เป็นระยะ \(h\) พิจารณาสามเหลี่ยมมุมฉาก ASB ซึ่งมี SB = \(d\) และ AB = \(h\) จะได้
After passing through the biprism, the light bends down toward the optical axis by the angle \(\delta_m\). If the outgoing ray is extended back to the left (the dashed line in Figure 1), it reaches S1, so the angle between AS and AS1 is \(\delta_m\). The line AC is parallel to the optical axis, so the angle between AC and AS is \(\theta\) (equal to the angle at which the ray leaves S), and the angle between AC and AS1 is \(\delta_m - \theta\). The right triangle S1AC, with AC = \(d\) and S1C = \(a/2 - h\), gives
หลังผ่าน biprism แสงเบนลงเข้าหา optical axis เป็นมุม \(\delta_m\) ถ้าลากเส้นของแสงที่ออกมาย้อนกลับไปทางซ้าย (เส้นประในรูปที่ 1) เส้นนี้จะไปถึง S1 มุมระหว่าง AS กับ AS1 จึงเท่ากับ \(\delta_m\) ส่วนเส้น AC ขนานกับ optical axis ทำให้มุมระหว่าง AC กับ AS เท่ากับ \(\theta\) (เท่ากับมุมที่ออกจาก S) แล้วมุมระหว่าง AC กับ AS1 จึงเท่ากับ \(\delta_m - \theta\) พิจารณาสามเหลี่ยมมุมฉาก S1AC ซึ่งมี AC = \(d\) และ S1C = \(a/2 - h\) จะได้
Substituting \(h = d\tan\theta\) from triangle ASB and rearranging step by step gives
When \(\theta\) and \(\delta_m - \theta\) are very small (in rad), the approximations \(\tan\theta \cong \theta\) and \(\tan(\delta_m - \theta) \cong \delta_m - \theta\) can be used. Substituting \(\delta_m\) from Eq. (1) then gives [1]
Equation (2) shows that \(a\) does not depend on \(\theta\). Whatever the height \(h\) at which the light reaches the flat face, every ray that passes through the upper half traces back to the same point, S1, which is a distance \(a/2 = d\delta_m\) above S. If point A is higher than S1 (\(\theta > \delta_m\)), point C lies above S1 and the angle at A becomes \(\theta - \delta_m\); substituting this angle and rearranging again gives the same Eq. (2).
Two paths to point Pแสงสองทางที่ไปถึงจุด P
The light that passes through the upper half and reaches point P on the screen (path (1) in Figure 1) leaves the biprism as if it came from S1, along the straight line S1P. The light that passes through the lower half (path (2)) seems to come from S2, along the straight line S2P. The upper and lower halves of the biprism are the same (symmetric), so S1 and S2 start with the same phase. Let \(s_1\) = S1P and \(s_2\) = S2P. The path difference between the two paths is [1]
Finding the path difference is therefore the same as for the double slit: two points, S1 and S2, a distance \(a\) apart, send light to point P.
Path difference
Let \(s\) be the distance from the flat face of the biprism to the screen, and \(y\) the height of P on the screen, measured from the optical axis. Along the optical axis, S1 and S2 are a distance \(d + s\) from the screen, and they lie a distance \(a/2\) above and below the optical axis. Using the Pythagorean theorem as on the page Fresnel’s Mirrors, with \(s\) of that page replaced by \(d + s\), gives
Substituting \(s_1\) and \(s_2\) into Eq. (3) gives
When \(d + s\) is much larger than \(a\) and P is close to the optical axis (\(y \ll d + s\)), the same small-angle approximation as on the page Young’s Double-Slit Experiment can be used, with \(L\) replaced by \(d + s\). This gives
เมื่อ \(d + s\) มากกว่า \(a\) มากๆ และ P อยู่ใกล้ optical axis (\(y \ll d + s\)) ใช้การประมาณมุมเล็กแบบเดียวกับในหน้า Young’s Double-Slit Experiment โดยแทน \(L\) ด้วย \(d + s\) จะได้
Irradiance at PIrradiance ที่ P
Both paths pass through the biprism without any reflection, so there is no extra phase of \(\pi\) as in Lloyd’s Mirror. The irradiance at P is therefore given by the same equation as for Young’s experiment [1]
Here \(I_0\) is the irradiance at P when light arrives along only one path.
Positions of the bright and dark fringesตำแหน่งของ fringe สว่างและ fringe มืด
A bright fringe occurs where \(\cos^2\) equals 1, that is, where the angle in the brackets of Eq. (6) is a whole-number multiple of \(\pi\). Substituting \(\Delta\) from Eq. (5), solving for \(y\) and then substituting \(a\) from Eq. (2), step by step, gives
The positions of the bright fringes are therefore [1]
\(y_m\) is the position of the bright fringe of order m, measured from the optical axis. \(m\) can be positive or negative because fringes form both above and below the optical axis. On the optical axis (\(y_0 = 0\)) the two paths have the same length (\(\Delta = 0\)) and the fringe is bright, as in Fresnel’s mirrors. A dark fringe occurs where the angle in the brackets is a whole number plus one half times \(\pi\); rearranging in the same way gives
The spacing between neighbouring fringes is \(\lambda(d + s)/(2d\alpha(n - 1))\). With glass of larger \(n\), or with a biprism of larger \(\alpha\), S1 and S2 are farther apart and the fringes are closer together. Equations (5), (7) and (8) hold only when \(y \ll d + s\).
Region of wave superposition
Fringes form only on the part of the screen that the light from the upper half and the light from the lower half reach together [1]. Take the lower edge of the beam from the upper half as the line drawn from S1 through the point where the optical axis crosses the flat face of the biprism; this line reaches the screen at \(y = -s\delta_m\). In the same way, the upper edge of the beam from the lower half reaches the screen at \(y = s\delta_m\). If the biprism is tall enough, the region of wave superposition on the screen is therefore
Outside this region the screen receives light from only one half (\(I = I_0\)) or no light at all.

A biprism is made of glass with \(n = 1.50\) and has a prism angle \(\alpha = 0.020\) rad (about 1.15°). A point source a distance \(d = 0.200\) m from the flat face of the biprism emits light of wavelength \(\lambda = 600\) nm, and the screen is a distance \(s = 0.800\) m from the biprism. Find \(\delta_m\), the distance \(a\) between S1 and S2, the position \(y_1\) of the bright fringe, and the width of the region where fringes form.
The biprism bends the light by only 0.0100 rad (about 0.57°), yet S1 and S2 are 4.00 mm apart. The bright fringe \(y_1\) is 0.150 mm from the optical axis, which is also the spacing between fringes. The region where fringes form is 16.0 mm wide (\(y\) from −8.00 mm to 8.00 mm, from Eq. (9)), so it holds 107 bright fringes, \(y_{-53}\) to \(y_{53}\). These positions are very small compared with \(d + s\) (1.00 m), so the condition \(y \ll d + s\) holds and Eq. (7) can be used.

Try the visualization in the following order.
- At the start, P is at \(y\) = −6 µm, near the line \(y_{-1}\). What does the status label say? Then drag P to the optical axis (\(y\) = 0). What is \(\Delta\)? Is P bright or dark, and how does this differ from Lloyd’s mirror?
- Drag P up until it leaves the darkly shaded area. Which half of the biprism does the light reaching P come from, and what is \(I/(4I_0)\)? Does the edge of the region with fringes match \(s\delta_m\) from Eq. (9)?
- Press Reset, then increase \(n\) from 1.50 to 1.80. How much do \(\delta_m\) and \(a\) change? How do S1 and S2 move? How do the fringe spacing and the number of bright fringes on the screen change? Then try reducing \(\alpha\) instead.
- Press Reset. At the start, “\(\Delta\) used in the calculation” is Eq. (5). Do the bright fringes on the graph match every \(y_m\) line? Then switch to Eq. (4). How do the bright fringes far from the optical axis change?
Common mistakes & limitations
- Scope: the model of [1] is used, in which every ray leaving the biprism travels as if it came from S1 or S2, as given by Eq. (2); the light from the two halves has the same irradiance at P (\(I_0\)); light reflected at the glass surfaces is ignored; the size of S is not taken into account; the brightness on the screen does not fall off with distance; diffraction of light is not included; and only light that passes through the biprism reaches the screen.
- In the visualization, \(\alpha\) is tens of degrees and \(d + s\) is only about 100 µm so that the figure and several fringes fit in one view, whereas a real biprism has \(\alpha\) of about 1° [1]. \(\delta_m\) in the visualization is therefore calculated from Eq. (1), following the model. With Eq. (4), the brightness on the screen is calculated with the exact \(\Delta\) from the positions of S1 and S2, so the \(y_m\) lines from Eq. (7) match the bright fringes only near the optical axis. With Eq. (5), the bright fringes match every \(y_m\) line, but the \(\Delta\) used is an approximation.
