Fringes of Equal Thickness Fringes of equal thickness
Why does a film of uneven thickness show evenly spaced dark and bright bands (single-colour light) or different colours (white light), and how does each band tell the film thickness?
Have you ever noticed why we see rainbow colours when oil floats on water, why each spot has a different colour, and why the colours change when we look from another angle? The reason is that the oil layer is not equally thick everywhere [1], so the light at each angle and each wavelength interferes differently by the time it reaches the eye.
The Interference in Dielectric Films page explains that light reflected from the top and bottom surfaces of a thin film can interfere, and that the result depends on the optical path difference, which depends on the film thickness and the angle of the light. That page uses a film of the same thickness everywhere; this page shows the case where the thickness varies. If the direction of the light is fixed, points of equal thickness are equally bright or dark, so each fringe follows a line of equal thickness. These are called fringes of equal thickness [1].
Thickness differences of only a few nanometres cannot be seen by eye, but the interactive visualizations on this page draw the thickness larger so that the light paths can be seen. They show two cases: Visualization A, a wedge-shaped layer of air between two microscope slides in monochromatic light (light of a single wavelength), and Visualization B, white light reflected from an oil slick on water.

Optical path difference and the phase added on reflectionoptical path difference
Light striking the film splits into two beams: beam (1) is reflected at the top surface of the film, and beam (2) is refracted into the film and reflected at the bottom surface. When light passes from a medium of refractive index \(n_0\) into a film of refractive index \(n_f\), it is refracted according to Snell’s law (the refractive index tells how many times slower light travels in a medium than in vacuum).
where \(\theta_i\) is the angle of incidence and \(\theta_t\) is the angle of the light in the film (both measured from the normal). Where the film is \(t\) thick, beam (2) travels farther in the film than beam (1); this gives the optical path difference due to the path [1]
The derivation of Eq. (2) is explained step by step on the Interference in Dielectric Films page (Eqs. (1)–(7) of that page), or see [1], Eq. (35).
Besides the path, reflection can also add phase. Reflection from the side of lower refractive index to higher (external reflection) adds a phase of \(\pi\), while reflection from higher to lower (internal reflection) adds none. If the two beams are reflected in different ways, the difference caused by reflection is equivalent to a path of \(\Delta_r = \lambda/2\); if they are reflected in the same way, \(\Delta_r = 0\) [1].
Bright and dark fringesเงื่อนไขของ fringe สว่างและมืด
At normal incidence, \(\cos\theta_t = 1\), and the conditions for bright and dark fringes are [1]
where \(m\) is the order (0, 1, 2, …). This page lets the angle of incidence be changed, so using \(\Delta_p\) from Eq. (2) in place of \(2n_f t\) gives conditions that hold at any angle [1], Eqs. (35)–(37)
If the direction of the light is fixed (\(\theta_t\) constant), the only thing that changes from one point to another is \(t\), so points of equal thickness lie on the same fringe.
Air wedge between two microscope slides (Visualization A)ลิ่มอากาศระหว่างแผ่นสไลด์สองแผ่น (visualization A)
Visualization A has a beam splitter, a lens and a screen that stay in place. When \(\theta_i\) is increased, the plane of the light source tilts, so the light reflected down by the beam splitter strikes the wedge at angle \(\theta_i\), and the light reflected from the wedge leaves on the other side of the normal at the same angle.
When two microscope slides are laid one on the other, touching along one edge and held apart at the other edge by a thin spacer of thickness \(d\), such as a hair, the layer of air between them is wedge-shaped [1]. Let \(x\) be the distance from the edge where the slides touch and \(L\) the distance from that edge to the spacer. From similar triangles, the thickness of the air layer at \(x\) is
Beam (1) is reflected at the top surface of the air layer (from glass to air, an internal reflection) and beam (2) at the bottom surface (from air to glass, an external reflection), so \(\Delta_r = \lambda/2\) [1]. The film is air, \(n_f = 1\), and the two surfaces of the top slide are nearly parallel; applying Eq. (1) at the top and bottom surfaces of the slide shows that the angle \(\theta_t\) in the air layer equals the angle of incidence \(\theta_i\) in air.
Substituting \(\Delta_r = \lambda/2\) into the dark-fringe condition of Eq. (4), and then \(t\) from Eq. (5), gives the positions of the dark fringes
At the edge where the slides touch (\(x = 0\), \(m = 0\)) there is a dark fringe, because with \(t = 0\) only \(\Delta_r = \lambda/2\) remains. As \(t\) increases linearly with \(x\), the order \(m\) rises by 1 at a time, so dark and bright fringes alternate at equal spacing [1].
Example: \(\lambda\) = 600 nm, \(d\) = 2 µm, \(L\) = 50 mm, \(n_f = 1\), normal incidence (\(\theta_t = 0^\circ\)). Find the fringe spacing \(\Delta x\) and the position \(x\) of \(m = 3\).
On a wedge 50 mm long with a fringe spacing of 7.5 mm, there are dark fringes \(m\) = 0 to 6, 7 in total (50/7.5=6.67). Dark fringe \(m = 3\) is at \(x\) = 22.5 mm and the next bright fringe is at \(x\) = 26.25 mm. The starting position of P in Visualization A (\(x\) = 24.2 mm) lies between these two, so it is between bright and dark. If \(\theta_i\) is increased to 10°, \(\cos\theta_t\) = 0.98 and the fringe spacing on the wedge grows to 7.62 mm.
Oil slick on water in white light (Visualization B)คราบน้ำมันบนผิวน้ำกับ white light (visualization B)
White light from an extended source, such as the sky, falls on an oil layer of uneven thickness. Both the thickness and the angle of incidence, which differ from point to point, decide which wavelengths undergo constructive interference [1]. In Visualization B, oil (\(n_f\) = 1.45) lies on water (\(n_s\) = 1.33) with air (\(n_0\) = 1.00) above. Beam (1) is reflected from air to oil (external reflection) and beam (2) from oil to water (internal reflection), so \(\Delta_r = \lambda/2\). Substituting into the bright-fringe condition of Eq. (4) gives the reinforced wavelengths
In Visualization B the lens is \(s\) = 25 mm above the film. Light from a point \(x\) on the film that passes through the centre of the lens makes an angle \(\theta_i\) with the normal, where \(\tan\theta_i = x/s\). The light reaching that point comes from the sky in exactly the direction that reflects into the lens (the arrows from the light source in Figure 2). Points farther from the centre therefore use larger angles; for example, at the starting position of P (\(x\) = −6 mm), \(\theta_i\) = 13.50° and \(\theta_t\) = 9.26° from Eq. (1). Even if the film had the same thickness everywhere, the colour would change slightly with position.
Example: oil \(t\) = 112 nm thick at the centre of the film (\(\theta_t = 0^\circ\)). Calculate the optical path difference (\(\Delta_p\)) and the wavelengths of constructive interference of orders 1 and 2.
In the visible range (380–780 nm) only 649.6 nm is reinforced, while 216.5 nm lies outside the range, so this region looks red, standing out from the other wavelengths. If the oil is 5 µm thick, as many as 19 wavelengths in the visible range are reinforced; colours of about equal strength add up to what we see as white. Looking over the whole oil slick, we therefore see white, rainbow colours, or no colour at all in some places.

- In Visualization A, P starts between bright and dark. Drag P to the nearest dark fringe: what are \(x\) and the order? Then drag it to \(x = 0\): why is the edge where the slides touch dark? (See Eq. (4) with \(t = 0\).)
- Increase \(d\) from 2 µm to 10 µm: how do the size of the spacer, the fringe spacing and the number of dark fringes change?
- Increase \(\theta_i\) from 0° to 10°: which parts of Figure 1 turn and which stay in place, and how does \(\Delta x\) on the wedge change? Compare with Eq. (7).
- In Visualization B, press Red, then drag P from the centre of the film to the edge: how do the colour and \(\theta_i\) change?
- Press Thick film and then Very thin film: what is the colour at P, and how many wavelengths are reinforced?
- Press Reset, then drag P across points of different colours: how does \(t\) at P change?

Common mistakes & limitations
- Scope: only the first two beams are used (top and bottom surfaces of the film), light reflected from the outer surfaces of the slides is not included, the lens is thin, and the brightness of each beam uses the normal-incidence reflection at every angle
- Visualization A assumes that the light reaches every point of the wedge at the same angle \(\theta_i\), and allows \(\theta_i\) only from 0 to 10° because the beam splitter stays in place; Visualization B uses the angle of the light through the centre of the lens and ignores the lens blocking light from the sky
- The film thickness, lens distances and sizes in the figures are not to scale; the values in Results are always calculated from the values set
