Newton's Rings Newton's rings
Why does a convex lens resting on a flat glass plate give dark and bright rings that get closer together away from the centre, and how do the ring radii give the radius of curvature of the lens?
The convex surface of a lens is part of a sphere, and the radius of that sphere is called the radius of curvature. In some lenses the radius of curvature is several metres long, so the surface is only very slightly curved, and measuring the curvature with a ruler or a vernier caliper is difficult.
One way to measure the curvature of a lens is with Newton's rings. The convex side of the lens is placed on an optical flat (a glass plate with a very flat surface), leaving a thin air film between the convex surface and the flat surface. At the centre of the lens the air film is 0 mm thick, because this is where the glass plate touches the curved surface of the lens, and the film becomes thicker farther from the point of contact. When parallel light of a single wavelength falls on the curved surface of the lens and we look from above, we see dark and bright rings with a common centre, called Newton's rings [1]. Each ring follows a line along which the air film has the same thickness (fringes of equal thickness; see the Fringes of Equal Thickness page). If the radius of a ring is measured, the radius of curvature of the lens can be calculated, and if the lens surface is not a perfect sphere, the rings are distorted, so the method can also be used to check the quality of a lens surface.

Optical path difference and the phase added on reflectionoptical path difference
Light falling at normal incidence on the curved surface of the lens splits into two beams at the air film: beam (1) is reflected at the lower, convex surface of the lens, and beam (2) passes through the air film and is reflected at the top surface of the optical flat. Where the air film is \(t\) thick, beam (2) travels farther than beam (1), on the way down and on the way back up, so the optical path difference is [1]
where \(n_f\) is the refractive index of the film (air, \(n_f = 1\)) and \(\theta_t\) is the angle of the light in the film, measured from the normal (normal incidence, \(\theta_t = 0\)). The derivation of \(\Delta_p\) is explained on the Interference in Dielectric Films page.
Interference in dielectric films
Reflection from the side of lower refractive index to higher adds a phase of \(\pi\), while reflection from higher to lower adds no phase. The resulting path difference between the two beams caused by reflection is \(\Delta_r = \lambda/2\) when the two beams are reflected in different ways, and \(\Delta_r = 0\) when they are reflected in the same way.
Conditions for bright and dark rings
At normal incidence, the conditions for bright and dark fringes are [1]
where \(m\) is the order (0, 1, 2, …) and \(\lambda\) is the wavelength.
At the point of contact, \(t_m = 0\). Substituting \(m = 0\) into Eq. (2), when \(\Delta_r = \lambda/2\) the condition for a dark ring holds, so the fringe at the centre is dark. Conversely, when \(\Delta_r = 0\) (transmitted light; see the section below), the condition for a bright ring holds, and the centre is bright instead. Substituting \(m\) greater than 0 gives the thickness \(t_m\) of the air film at the ring of order \(m\).
Calculating the radius of curvature of the lens
Let \(R\) be the radius of curvature of the convex surface of the lens, \(r_m\) the radius of the ring of order \(m\), and \(t_m\) the thickness of the air film at distance \(r_m\) from the point of contact. Applying the Pythagorean theorem to the red dashed right triangle in Figure 1 (b) gives the relation
Solving for \(R\) gives
So, by measuring the radius of a ring in the image and calculating \(t_m\) from Eq. (3), we can calculate the radius of curvature of the lens from Eq. (5).
Relation between the ring radius (\(r_m\)) and the air-film thickness (\(t_m\))ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างรัศมีของวง (\(r_m\)) กับความหนาของช่องอากาศ (\(t_m\))
Because \(t_m\) (micrometres) is much smaller than \(r_m\) (millimetres), \(t_m^2\) can be dropped from Eq. (5); substituting \(t_m\) from Eq. (3) then gives the ring radius \(r_m\) [1]:
Eq. (6) shows that \(r_m\) increases with \(\sqrt{m}\), not with \(m\), so the outer rings are closer together than the inner ones, and the rings become larger when \(R\) or \(\lambda\) increases.
\(r_m\) from Eq. (6) differs very little from \(r_m\) calculated from Eq. (4) without dropping \(t_m^2\). For example, at \(\lambda\) = 546 nm and \(R\) = 3 m, the two values for bright ring \(m = 10\) differ by less than 1 nm. The difference grows when \(t_m\) is large and \(R\) is small: at \(\lambda\) = 700 nm and \(R\) = 0.5 m, dark ring \(m = 30\) gives 3.240353 mm from Eq. (4) and 3.240370 mm from Eq. (6), a difference of 17 nm.
Radius of curvature from the refractive index and the focal length
If the refractive index \(n\) of the glass and the focal length \(f\) of the lens are known, \(R\) can be calculated from the lensmaker's equation [1], where \(R_1\) and \(R_2\) are the radii of curvature of the two surfaces of the lens. A plano-convex lens has one convex surface (\(R_1 = R\)) and one flat surface (\(R_2 \to \infty\), \(1/R_2 = 0\)), which gives
Transmitted light
Rings are also seen when looking from below the optical flat, but they differ from those in reflected light in two ways [1]. First, the contrast is low, because the beam that passes straight through has a large amplitude, while the beam reflected twice (at the top surface of the optical flat and at the convex surface of the lens) is left with a small amplitude. Second, the centre is bright and the whole ring pattern is the reverse of that in reflected light, because both reflections of the twice-reflected beam are external reflections: the two phase shifts of \(\pi\) add up to \(2\pi\), so they make no difference from the beam that passes straight through (\(\Delta_r = 0\)).
Worked example
With the setup of Figure 1 and a light source of wavelength \(\lambda\) = 546 nm, the radius of bright ring \(m = 10\) is measured as \(r_m\) = 3.945 mm. The radius of curvature \(R\) of the lens is found as follows.
In this example \(t_m^2\) is about 2.3 million times smaller than \(r_m^2\); using Eq. (6) gives the same \(R\) = 3.0004 m to four decimal places.
