How the shift between two fringe sets at a film edge gives the film thickness on the nanometer scale, and why white light or a gradual edge is needed for an unambiguous reading
Watch out: when you measure film thickness with an interferometer, the fringes can shift by exactly the same amount whether the film is 150, 425, or 700 nm thick.
A thin film coated on a substrate is only a few hundred nanometers thick, far too thin to measure with a ruler or to see directly under a microscope. With interference, however, a thickness this small shifts the fringes by a few hundred micrometers, which can be measured under the microscope [1]. The microscope shows two sets of fringes side by side, one formed above the substrate and the other above the film, offset from each other at the film edge.
The trouble is that all fringes look alike. With a sharp film edge and monochromatic light, you cannot tell which fringe above the substrate continues into which fringe above the film, so only the fractional part of the shift can be read. The interactive visualization on this page shows the measurement setup on the left and the microscope view on the right. Measure the distances yourself, then see how white light or a sloped film edge tells you how many fringes the pattern has shifted.

Setup and virtual mirrorชุดวัดและ virtual mirror
Monochromatic light from the light source LS travels through the light pipe LP to the beam splitter BS, which splits it into two beams. One beam goes to the mirror M, and the other goes down to the surface of the film F coated on the substrate S. Both reflected beams return through BS, travel up to the microscope MS, and interfere [1] (Figure 1, left).
Seen from the microscope, light from mirror M appears to come from the image of M in the reflecting plane of BS. This image, called the virtual mirror M′, lies above the film, so the interference looks as if it comes from a thin air film between M′ and the lower surface [1]. Moving mirror M in or out shifts M′ up or down, and tilting M by an angle \(\alpha\) tilts M′ relative to the film surface. The air film then becomes a wedge (tilted perpendicular to the plane of the setup drawing), and straight, parallel Fizeau fringes appear, as on the Fringes of equal thickness page.
Fringes of equal thickness
Condition for a bright fringeเงื่อนไขของ fringe สว่าง
At normal incidence, a bright fringe appears where [1]
Here \(t\) is the thickness of the air film at that point, \(n = 1\) for air, and \(m\) is the order. The meanings of \(\Delta_p\) and \(\Delta_r\) are explained on the Interference in dielectric films page. On this page both beams are assumed to reflect from the same kind of surface (mirror M, and the film and substrate under a silver overcoat), so \(\Delta_r = 0\) and a bright fringe appears where \(2t = m\lambda\). The point where \(t = 0\) is therefore the bright fringe with \(m = 0\).
In an air wedge tilted by an angle \(\alpha\) (in rad, very small), the thickness \(t\) increases by \(\alpha\) per unit distance along the tilt. From Eq. (1), the next bright fringe appears when \(t\) has increased by \(\lambda/2\), so the fringe spacing \(x\) is
Fringe shift at the film edgeการเลื่อนของ fringe ที่ขอบฟิล์ม
From Eq. (1) with \(\Delta_r = 0\), order \(m\) gives
As the bright fringe shifts, \(t\) increases in steps of \(\lambda/2\) [1], taking the fringe to order \(m+n\):
Subtracting Eq. (3) from Eq. (4) gives
Substituting \(\Delta t = t_{m+n} - t_m\) and \(\Delta m = n\) gives
แทน \(\Delta t = t_{m+n} - t_m\) และ \(\Delta m = n\) จะได้
Here \(t_m\) is the thickness of the air film between M′ and the substrate surface (S), and \(t_{m+n}\) is the thickness of the air film between M′ and the film surface (F). The difference \(\Delta t\) is therefore equal to the film thickness \(d\), which gives
A fringe shift of \(x\) corresponds to a change of 1 in order, a shift of \(2x\) to a change of 2, and a shift of \(nx\) to a change of \(n\), as the table shows.
| \(\Delta x\) | \(\Delta m\) |
|---|---|
| \(x\) | 1 |
| \(2x\) | 2 |
| \(nx\) | \(n\) |
With \(\Delta m = n\), this can be written as
Rearranging gives [1]
Substituting \(\Delta m = \Delta x/x\) into Eq. (5) gives the film thickness from two distances measured in the microscope [1], Eq. (40)
Substituting \(x = \lambda/2\alpha\) (Eq. (2)) into Eq. (7) gives
Eq. (8) shows that the film thickness does not depend on the wavelength. A large \(\alpha\) makes \(\Delta x\) smaller, while a small \(\alpha\) makes \(\Delta x\) larger.
Example: with light of \(\lambda\) = 550 nm, the measured fringe spacing is \(x\) = 0.275 mm and the fringe shift at the film edge is \(\Delta x\) = 0.700 mm. How thick is the film?
This example shows that a film a few hundred nanometers thick can shift the fringes by a few hundred micrometers.
Ambiguity at a sharp film edge
In the example above, \(\Delta m\) = 2.5455: the fringes have shifted by 2 whole spacings plus another 0.5455 of a spacing. With a sharp film edge and monochromatic light, however, you cannot see which fringe above the film continues from which fringe above the substrate, so only the fractional part, 0.5455 of a spacing (\(\Delta x\) = 0.150 mm), can be read. From Eq. (7), the film thickness could then be any of several values, such as 150, 425, 700, or 975 nm.
The book [1] gives two ways to resolve this:
- Method 1, white light: white light contains many wavelengths, and each has a different fringe spacing according to Eq. (2). Only where \(t = 0\) are all wavelengths bright at once, so the \(m = 0\) fringe appears as a single white band with colored bands beside it. Farther out, the colors overlap until no fringes can be seen, because white light has a very short coherence length (see the Two-beam interference page). The \(m = 0\) bands above the substrate and above the film can therefore be matched, and the distance between these two bands is \(\Delta x\).
- Method 2, gradual edge: if the film thickness rises gradually from 0 to \(d\) at the edge, the fringes shift gradually too and appear as continuous curves across the edge, so you can follow each fringe and see how far it has shifted.
Metal films and dielectric filmsmetal film และ dielectric film
Eq. (7) holds only when light reflects from the top surface of the film alone, as with an opaque metal film or a film with a silver overcoat. With a transparent dielectric film such as oil, part of the light enters the film and also reflects from its bottom surface, so there are three beams above the film: from M′ (\(E_0\)), from the top surface (\(E_1\)), and from the bottom surface (\(E_2\)). At normal incidence, the strength of the light reflected at the boundary between two media can be estimated from the reflection coefficient
For light traveling from a medium of refractive index \(n_1\) into one of \(n_2\), \(r\) gives the amplitude of the reflected light as a fraction of the incident light. \(r\) is positive for external reflection (which adds a phase of \(\pi\), as at mirror M) and negative for internal reflection. The air–oil surface (\(n_f\) = 1.45) gives \(E_1\) = 0.1837, and the oil–glass surface (\(n_s\) = 1.52) gives \(r\) = 0.0236. Accounting for the light passing down through the top surface and back up again (a factor of \(1 - E_1^2\)) gives \(E_2\) = 0.0228. Taking \(E_0 = 1\) for the light from mirror M, the intensity at a point above the film is
The cosine terms are the interference of each pair of beams (like the interference term on the Two-beam interference page). Above the substrate there are only two beams, so Eq. (10) is used with \(E_2 = 0\) and with \(E_1\) equal to \(r\) for the air–substrate surface. The equation ignores light that bounces back and forth inside the film, because \(r\) is small. Three cases arise, depending on the coherence length of the light:
- Air film so thick that \(2t\) exceeds the coherence length: light from M′ does not interfere with light from the film, and no fringes appear. If the film is thin enough, however, light from its top and bottom surfaces still interferes, giving film colors like the oil slick on the Fringes of equal thickness page.
- Air film thin enough, but the film so thick that \(2n_f d\) exceeds the coherence length: light from the bottom surface only raises the background brightness. The fringes sit where they would for a metal film, but are fainter.
- Every pair shorter than the coherence length (e.g. monochromatic light): the full Eq. (10) is needed. Light from the bottom surface makes the fringes above the film shift by something other than \(2d/\lambda\), so \(d\) from Eq. (7) differs from the true thickness.
Fringes of equal thickness

Measuring film thickness with an interferometerการวัดความหนาฟิล์มด้วย interferometer
- Constants: normal incidence, a 2 mm wide field of view in the microscope, mirror M reflects all the light
- Options: monochromatic or white light source (monochromatic), metal film or dielectric film (metal film)
- Adjustable values:
\(\lambda\) = 400 to 700 nm (550 nm), used with monochromatic light,
\(n_f\) = 1.30 to 2.00 (1.45) and \(n_s\) = 1.33 to 2.50 (1.52), used with a dielectric film,

Common mistakes & limitations
- Scope: normal incidence, air film with \(n = 1\), no repeated reflections inside the film, refractive indices independent of wavelength
- The angle \(\alpha\) and the thicknesses in the setup drawing and the cross-section are drawn larger so they can be seen, not to scale; the results are always calculated from the actual set values
- With a sharp edge and monochromatic light, only the fractional part of the shift can be read, so \(d\) may be off by a whole multiple of \(\lambda/2\)
- Dielectric film: the fringes are fainter, and \(d\) from Eq. (7) differs from the true thickness
