Beat Phenomenon ปรากฏการณ์ beat (Beat Phenomenon)

How two waves of nearly equal frequency add up to a wave whose strength rises and falls in a rhythm, and how that rhythm measures the difference of the two frequencies.

Think of tuning a guitar. You pluck the string you are tuning together with a string that is already correct. If the two frequencies differ slightly, you do not hear a steady tone; you hear the loudness rise and fall in a rhythm, "wah-wah, wah-wah". The more the two frequencies differ, the faster the rhythm. When you adjust the string until the rhythm slows down and disappears, the two strings have the same frequency.

This rhythm is called a beat. It appears when two waves with equal (or similar) amplitude and slightly different frequencies are added by the superposition principle (see the 01 Principle page of this category). Beats are useful because they measure the difference between two nearly equal frequencies very precisely [1].

This page answers two questions: what the sum of two waves with nearly equal frequencies looks like, and how the frequency of the rhythm is related to the two frequencies that were set. Card A shows the sum against time at one position, with the fast part and the slowly changing part drawn separately. Card B lets you hear the real sound and tune a string yourself.

Take two waves with the same amplitude \(E_0\), travelling in the \(+x\) direction in the same medium. Each wave has a frequency \(\nu\) (number of cycles per second, in Hz), an angular frequency \(\omega = 2\pi\nu\), a wavelength \(\lambda\) and a wave number \(k = 2\pi/\lambda\). The medium is nondispersive: waves of every frequency travel in it with the same speed \(v\), and in a medium that is the same everywhere each wave keeps a single wavelength all the way (\(\lambda = v/\nu\)). Two waves of different frequency therefore have different \(\lambda\) (\(k_1 \neq k_2\)) but the same \(v\). The electric fields of the two waves are

\[ E_1 = E_0 \cos(k_1 x - \omega_1 t) \tag{1} \]
\[ E_1 = E_0 \cos(k_1 x - \omega_1 t) \tag{1} \]
\[ E_2 = E_0 \cos(k_2 x - \omega_2 t) \tag{2} \]
\[ E_2 = E_0 \cos(k_2 x - \omega_2 t) \tag{2} \]

At the same position and time the total field is \(E_R = E_1 + E_2\). It can be written as a product of two cosines with the trigonometric identity \(\cos\alpha + \cos\beta = 2\cos\tfrac{1}{2}(\alpha+\beta)\cos\tfrac{1}{2}(\alpha-\beta)\) for any angles \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) (the substitution is worked out in [1], Eqs. (29)–(30)), once the average and the half-difference are defined as follows (the subscripts \(p\) and \(g\) are only labels that tell the two sets apart)

\[ \omega_p = \frac{\omega_1+\omega_2}{2}, \qquad k_p = \frac{k_1+k_2}{2} \tag{3} \]
\[ \omega_p = \frac{\omega_1+\omega_2}{2}, \qquad k_p = \frac{k_1+k_2}{2} \tag{3} \]
\[ \omega_g = \frac{\omega_1-\omega_2}{2}, \qquad k_g = \frac{k_1-k_2}{2} \tag{4} \]
\[ \omega_g = \frac{\omega_1-\omega_2}{2}, \qquad k_g = \frac{k_1-k_2}{2} \tag{4} \]

The total field is therefore

\[ E_R = 2E_0 \cos(k_p x - \omega_p t)\,\cos(k_g x - \omega_g t) \tag{5} \]
\[ E_R = 2E_0 \cos(k_p x - \omega_p t)\,\cos(k_g x - \omega_g t) \tag{5} \]

The first cosine has \(\omega_p\), the average of \(\omega_1\) and \(\omega_2\); the second has \(\omega_g\), half of their difference. When the two frequencies are close, \(\omega_p \gg \omega_g\), so the second cosine changes very slowly and acts as a slowly changing amplitude of the first. The first cosine is called the carrier and the slowly changing wave \(2E_0\cos(k_g x - \omega_g t)\) is called the envelope (the dashed curve in Figure 1).

The graph on this page is not a snapshot along the position axis at one moment. It looks at a single position \(x_0\), like an instrument fixed at one point, and shows how the field changes with time \(t\). Because \(v\) is the same everywhere, choosing another \(x_0\) only shifts the whole graph in time. This page uses \(x_0 = 0\), which makes \(k_p x_0 = k_g x_0 = 0\)

\[ E_R(x_0, t) = 2E_0 \cos(\omega_p t)\,\cos(\omega_g t) \qquad (x_0 = 0) \tag{6} \]
\[ E_R(x_0, t) = 2E_0 \cos(\omega_p t)\,\cos(\omega_g t) \qquad (x_0 = 0) \tag{6} \]

The energy carried by a wave is proportional to the square of \(E\) [1], so it pulses with the square of the envelope, which has two large lobes in each cycle of \(\cos(\omega_g t)\). The beat frequency \(\omega_b\) is therefore twice \(\omega_g\) [1]

\[ \omega_b = 2\omega_g = 2\left(\frac{\omega_1-\omega_2}{2}\right) = \omega_1 - \omega_2 \tag{7} \]
\[ \omega_b = 2\omega_g = 2\left(\frac{\omega_1-\omega_2}{2}\right) = \omega_1 - \omega_2 \tag{7} \]

Since \(\omega = 2\pi\nu\), the beat frequency \(\nu_b\) (in Hz) and the beat period \(T_b\) can be written as follows (the absolute value is used because a frequency cannot be negative; if \(\nu_1 < \nu_2\) the graph is unchanged because cosine is an even function)

\[ \nu_b = \frac{\omega_b}{2\pi} = |\nu_1 - \nu_2| \tag{8} \]
\[ \nu_b = \frac{\omega_b}{2\pi} = |\nu_1 - \nu_2| \tag{8} \]
\[ T_b = \frac{1}{\nu_b} \tag{9} \]
\[ T_b = \frac{1}{\nu_b} \tag{9} \]

Note: \(E\) is in relative units (a.u.) with \(E_0 = 1\). In Card B, which is sound, \(E\) stands for the oscillation of the sound wave. Equations (1)–(7) hold only for a nondispersive medium and two waves of equal amplitude.

Worked example

Use the initial values of Card A, \(\nu_1 = 110\) Hz and \(\nu_2 = 106\) Hz

\(\omega_1 = 2\pi\nu_1 = 2\pi(110\ \text{Hz}) = 6.9115\times10^{2}\ \text{rad/s}\)

\(\omega_1 = 2\pi\nu_1 = 2\pi(110\ \text{Hz}) = 6.9115\times10^{2}\ \text{rad/s}\)

\(\omega_2 = 2\pi\nu_2 = 2\pi(106\ \text{Hz}) = 6.6602\times10^{2}\ \text{rad/s}\)

\(\omega_2 = 2\pi\nu_2 = 2\pi(106\ \text{Hz}) = 6.6602\times10^{2}\ \text{rad/s}\)

\(\omega_p = \dfrac{\omega_1+\omega_2}{2} = 6.7858\times10^{2}\ \text{rad/s}\)

\(\omega_p = \dfrac{\omega_1+\omega_2}{2} = 6.7858\times10^{2}\ \text{rad/s}\)

\(\omega_g = \dfrac{\omega_1-\omega_2}{2} = 1.2566\times10^{1}\ \text{rad/s}\)

\(\omega_g = \dfrac{\omega_1-\omega_2}{2} = 1.2566\times10^{1}\ \text{rad/s}\)

\(\omega_b = 2\omega_g = 2.5133\times10^{1}\ \text{rad/s}\)

\(\omega_b = 2\omega_g = 2.5133\times10^{1}\ \text{rad/s}\)

\(\nu_b = |\nu_1-\nu_2| = 4\ \text{Hz}, \qquad T_b = \dfrac{1}{\nu_b} = 0.25\ \text{s}\)

\(\nu_b = |\nu_1-\nu_2| = 4\ \text{Hz}, \qquad T_b = \dfrac{1}{\nu_b} = 0.25\ \text{s}\)

\(\dfrac{\omega_p}{\omega_g} = 54\)

\(\dfrac{\omega_p}{\omega_g} = 54\)

There are therefore 4 beats in 1 second, so the 0.5 s shown in the graph of Card A contains 2 large lobes of \(E_R\)

3How to use this visualization

Card A — Sum of two waves (initial values \(\nu_1\) = 110 Hz, \(\nu_2\) = 106 Hz, time axis 0–500 ms)

Preset buttons (\(\nu_1\) / \(\nu_2\) in Hz): 110 / 106 is the initial setting, 440 / 444 is an example of tuning a string, and 22 / 18 gives a graph shape close to Fig 7 of the book (its frequencies are below the audible range, so it cannot be played in Card B).

  1. Count the large lobes of \(E_R\) in the graph (time axis 0–500 ms) and compare with \(\nu_b\) in Results. How are they related?
  2. Tick only \(\cos(k_p x_0 - \omega_p t)\) and \(\cos(k_g x_0 - \omega_g t)\). How many cycles does the dashed curve complete in 0.5 s, compared with the number of large lobes of \(E_R\)? Try to explain why they differ by a factor of two (see Eq. (7)).
  3. Tick the envelope \(\pm 2E_0|\cos(k_g x_0 - \omega_g t)|\) together with \(E_R\). Where does \(E_R\) touch the dashed curve, and where is \(E_R\) zero?
  4. Change \(\nu_2\) to 108 Hz. How do \(\nu_b\), \(\omega_p\) and \(\omega_g\) in Results change? How does the number of large lobes in the graph change?
  5. Change \(\nu_2\) to 110 Hz, equal to \(\nu_1\). What does \(E_R\) look like, and what does Results say?
  6. Press the preset 440 / 444, open the Graph console, tick Fixed limits and set x min = 0 and x max = 50 ms. What does the carrier look like compared with the envelope?
  7. Press the preset 22 / 18. Does the graph look like the figure in the book? What is \(\omega_p/\omega_g\), and what does Results say?

Card B — Listen and play the tuning game (uses the same \(\nu_1\), \(\nu_2\) as Card A, adjustable from 20 to 2000 Hz, which lies within the range of human hearing [2]) Press Play first to hear the sound, and start at a low volume. In the graph, the green curve is the sound wave calculated from the equations (as in Card A), and the red ± curves are the loudness measured from the sound that is really playing. The picture does not scroll: the red curve is drawn from left to right behind a thin red line that marks the present time, and starts again at the right edge. The time axis starts at 0–2 s. To see the carrier at this range you have to set Fixed limits (for example x min = 0, x max = 0.5).

  1. Press Play at the initial values (110 and 106 Hz). How many times per second does the loudness rise and fall, compared with \(\nu_b\) in Results? Does the red edge follow the outer edge of the green curve?
  2. Listen to \(\nu_1\) only, then \(\nu_2\) only, then both. What is different in what you hear, and how do the green and red curves change?
  3. Tuning game: take \(\nu_1\) as the reference tone and press \(\nu_2\) +1 Hz one step at a time until you no longer hear a rhythm. How does the rhythm change at each step? What is \(\nu_b\) when the rhythm is gone?
  4. Keep pressing until \(\nu_2\) is above \(\nu_1\) (for example 111 Hz) and listen again. From the sound alone, can you tell whether \(\nu_2\) is higher or lower than \(\nu_1\)? (see Eq. (8))

Common mistakes & limitations

  • Scope: two waves of equal amplitude in a nondispersive medium, and the graph shows \(x_0 = 0\) only.
  • The beat frequency is \(\nu_b = |\nu_1 - \nu_2|\), not the frequency of the second cosine, \(\omega_g/2\pi\), which is half of \(\nu_b\).
  • If the carrier is too dense to draw cycle by cycle, the graph is drawn as a band — set Fixed limits to see the carrier.
  • This page treats \(\omega_p \gg \omega_g\) as met when \(\omega_p/\omega_g \geq 10\).
  • In the graph of Card B the green curve is calculated from the equations and is not measured from the sound. The red curve is measured from the signal that the browser is really playing (relative level, not decibels), using the peak over a short slice (about 21–43 ms); what you hear also depends on your speakers or headphones.
