TOEFL ITP® Section 3: Reading comprehension TOEFL ITP® Section 3: Reading Comprehension
Each Reading set is one original passage of roughly 300–360 words with ten multiple-choice questions on the main idea, details, vocabulary in context, pronoun reference, “NOT” (EXCEPT) questions, and line-location questions. The passage is shown with a line number every five lines, so questions can point to a particular place.
The 30 sets are divided into three difficulty levels by topic. Level 1 (easy: sets 1–10) uses local, everyday topics, such as a neighborhood bakery, a community swimming pool, and a school vegetable garden. Level 2 (medium: sets 11–20) moves to general science and society topics, such as urban beekeeping, light pollution and the night sky, and glacier melt and freshwater planning. Level 3 (hard: sets 21–30) uses academic topics, such as thermohaline circulation and fisheries, cognitive load in multimedia learning, and lexical borrowing through language contact. Passages in the real test are academic texts, so Levels 2 and 3 are closest to what you will meet there.

How scoring works
- The Check answers button becomes available once you have answered all ten questions.
- If you open the passage translation or any answer panel before checking, the set does not count toward your score.
